Buffy: Can animals be turned into vampires?

Or only humans?

I would say only humans because only humans have souls…at least that’s the judeo-christian view…

Since a Buffy-type vampire lacks a soul anyway, what difference would that make?

Interesting idea. Maybe there are vampire rats in LA, leftovers from when Angel was living in the sewers.
The short answer is; there is no “evidence” non-humans can be turned into vampires in the Buffyverse.
Minor spoiler for an already-aired last-season episode:

I think if it could happen, there would have been somebody who loved thier dog as much as William loved his mother and would have sired the dog.

Oo! A vampire horse! That would be cool!

I think what Meatros meant was, if animals don’t have souls, there isn’t “room” for the vampire soul to move in and take up residence. Still, there’s nothing in either series that specifically refutes or supports the idea of animals turning into vampires.

A vampire horse would be cool, but IIRC, the vampire must drink enough blood to bring the human near death before siring. I don’t think a vamp could drink enough blood to drain a horse. A website about horse health suggests that a 1000-lb horse could have as much as 25 gallons of blood. That’s quite a lot for a “human” to drink. I think you’d need to start with smaller animals (or big humans) and work your way up.

Vampire chimps. Scary and funny! Expecially if they wear clothes and ride unicycles and stuff.

Which raises the inevitable question:

Who would win in a fight, vampire chimps or robot monkey butlers?

That movie from a couple of years ago – A Little Vampire or something like that – features Vampire Cows apparently the vampires have been sating their bloodlust by sucking on cows – with this Gary Larsonesque result).

What would you get if a vampire bit a vampire bat? Isn’t that redundant?

In an issue of Howard The Duck.

The result was…Bossy, The Hellcow!
