Buffy fans: Angel, The First, and LiveJournal

First off, just to reward intrepid souls who venture into this thread, check out the First Evil’s LiveJournal. Pretty funny stuff.

But next, I have a serious question. That livejournal references the fact that Angel was brought back from Hell by the First Evil. It also recalls the episode “Amends” where the First tried to get Angel to kill himself.

Now, that, for me, is a seriously unresolved plot point. Why WAS Angel brought back from Hell? Who did it? And if it really was the First, why bring him back only to try and get him to kill himself? Even if it wasn’t, why was it trying to get Angel to kill himself in the first place? What’s so important to the first about a vampire with a soul, and if there IS something important about it, why not simply have some minion kill the helpless Spike?

I realize that some of these questions are WAFO (Watch and find out), but maybe some aren’t. I did watch the show from back then, but I can’t remeber any good reason being given for why Angel was back or why the First wanted him dead.

Angel was brought back from Hell so that Joss could create Angel the Series. And of course, the premise of AtS is that Angel is the Champion of the People, seeking redemption. Prophecies surround him and apparently his kid is important. In Amends, the FE takes credit for bringing Angel back, but the miracle snow ( ) implied pretty heavily that Angel was saved by The Powers thta Be from Hell because he had a Greater Purpose.

As for why the FE wants a Vampire with a soul…well, we don’t know yet. I know some people suspect it has something to do with the Balance. Spike (and Angel) have one purpose as vampires—to be evil. Then two vampires, the most legendary vamps in the Buffyverse no less, decide to fight against Evil? That’s gotta chap the First’s ass.
Though (Spoilers for AtS) it’ll be interesting that Angel loses his soul for a good deal of time this season, so we’re back to only one soulled vamp in the world

—In Amends, the FE takes credit for bringing Angel back—

But why, when it intends to kill him again anyway? Was it ever revealed that it had a special purpose for having Angel dead?

But it didn’t intend to kill Angel. The Master Plan was for Angel to fuck Buffy, bite her at the Happy Moment, drain her, kill her, and then turn into Angelus. That way the FE gets rid of the Slayer and the pesky soulled vamp. Only Angel decided that the temptation was too strong, and he couldn’t risk it, so he would kill himself instead.
