I’m re-watching the series (up to season 7 - WooT! - made it through season 6 without slashing my own wrists!), and it occurs to me that I don’t think they ever call Willow a lesbian. They call her a gay woman, they talk about her not driving stick anymore, they make different allusions like that, but I don’t think they ever actually used the “L” word. Anyone have proof that they actually did? If they didn’t, why not?
Not to be bitchy about it, but the only spoiler in this thread is the one in your thread title. Which makes the spoiler warning a bit useless.
But no, to the best of my recollection, they never specifically called her a lesbian.
Joss always said that Willow loved people, not sexes.
There’s one (I think toward the end of Season 5) where someone from the Watcher’s Council is interviewing Willow and Tara. He asks about their relationship and they said something like:
“We’re friends.”
“Good friends.”
“Lovers, in fact. Yeah. Big, gay, lesbian-type lovers.”
Then the interviewer clarifies that he was talking about their relationship with the Slayer. I’m not sure that they said “lesbian,” but that’s how I remember it.
That was “Checkpoint”, one of my all-time favorite episodes. Buffy Guide also says that’s the correct quote.
My favorite is on *Angel * in “Disharmony”, in Cordy & Willow’s phone conversation:
Cordy: “How come you guys didn’t tell me about Harmony? Sunnydale is that far away you couldn’t afford a little phone call?”
Willow: “Harmony? Wha-what about Harmony?”
Cordy: “She’s here - in L.A.”
Willow: “Yikes. Big yikes. Uh. What happened? Did she come after you?”
Cordy: “Yeah! She practically attacked me in my bedroom last night.”
Willow: “Your bedroom. How did she…”
Cordy: “Came in while I was sleeping. Good thing I woke up, too. She was ready to jump me right there! But I think she got the message that I don’t go for that sort of stuff when I shot
her down.”
Willow: “You wounded her?”
Cordy: “She’ll get over it. I never should have invited her to stay with me.”
Willow: “Say what?”
Cordy: “Yeah, I know. Awkward much?”
Willow: “Cordelia! Okay! We’re all clear on the fact that Harmony is a vampire right?”
Cordy: “Oh. Harmony is a vampire? - That’s why she - oh, my god, I’m so embarrassed! (Giggles) All this time I thought she was a great big lesbo!
(Pause, while she get’s an earful from Willow) Oh, yeah? Really? - Well, that’s great! Good for you.”
Oops - my bad. I don’t know if it’s possible to un-spoiler that, given that that is the question of the thread.
Hmm, “lesbian-type lovers.” So close - is it worth debating whether “lesbian-type lovers” is not the same as “Willow is a lesbian?”
Heck, in “Once More with Feeling” Willow went down on Tara.
Marc
Loved that significant pause in, “You make me complete.”
Wasn’t there an episode when Anya was accusing Willow of trying to pick up Xander, and Willow said something like, “Hello? I like girls now!”
Triangle - “Hello, gay now.”
Xander: You really dated him?
Anya: Yes.
Xander: But you like me better.
Anya: Yes. Willow likes you too, but not in a sexy way 'cuz she’s gay, and she won’t break us up so it’s all okay.
I just edited the title to make the question a bit more ambiguous. Plus, I mentioned spoilers up to season 6 so that you won’t get spoiled for season 7.
Thanks. I don’t care what the other posters say, you are a gentleman and a scholar. And those pants don’t make your butt look big.
It cuts at the last “you make me -” but so many people remember it as “you make me com-”.
Possibly conflating it with a pop song whose refrain is
“You make me come
You make me complete
You make me completely miserable.”
By Lit, I think.
