Oh, I completely agree. Given Xander’s history with spells and demons to that point (solidly negative with the exception of the joining spell in S4 and even that had bad consequences) it’s totally bizarre that he would pretty much out of nowhere turn to magic to try to get a “happy ending” with Anya.
