Buffy: The Musical

Just getting ready for the show. I saw SMG on Leno last night and she said something to the affect of:

So, let’s hope for someone good at the mixing board.

If you’ve got a fast connection, check out Buffy.com. They’ve got both video and audio clips, and they’re pretty entertaining.

Amber Benson, who plays Tara, seems to be pretty good. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to feature Tony Head very much in the clips. Guess we’ll have to wait for the show.

I wonder if they’ll cut a CD? I bet it would sell, even if the singers and the songs suck (which they don’t seem to, at least not a lot).

Actually, looking at buffy.com again, they’re taking a vote on wether to issue a soundtrack.

Tony’s a trained singer, Amber’s performed Rocky Horror on stage, and James Marsters is an accomplished musician who’s performed on stage before.

I’m just pissed I’m missing it. It looks wonderful.

Pretty good overall. Some of the singing and dancing was, um, kinda painful to see and hear, but on the whole I’ll say it worked. Mainly because something actually, happened, plot lines were advanced, things had consequences.

Tara has a wonderful voice, Spike did very nicely, Giles was a bit underused, Dawn has a hot little body.

Buffy, well, acts pretty well, Xander was amusing at times.

Did anyone else notice that during Giles number, when Buffy was punching the heavy bag in slowmo, how bad she looked? All her punches came from the arms, no body behind them. I wish SMG was an athlete.

After starting this thread I noticed this thread.

Got me confused there for a minute.

Tara has a lovely singing voice, perfectly suited to the folk-tuney number(s) they gave her. Giles is hot when he sings (which I already knew). Spike doesn’t have as good a voice as I hoped, but Oh. My. God. he’s fucking babe-alicious (and I don’t like blondes!). Buffy did a more decent job singing than I thought she would have, I was impressed. I’m sure that Dawn’s had some ballet in the past.

As for plot development … Very Nice.

Sorry for the vagueness, trying to post without spoilers.

Amen to that! Spike is the whole reason I started watching this show…Now, of course, I have been sucked in completely. Regardless, I still follow Spike’s storylines more closely than anyone elses. I’d let him suck on my stuff any day of the week. Ohhhh-hooo!

er, em,'ahem, Moving on. I thought the whole musical thing was okay–the last five minutes and the trailer for next week were better than everythng else combined. Giles you naughty boy!

ARRRGGHHH!

I changed the channel before scenes from next week because I wanted to watch 24. What did I miss???!

Basically, looks like next week all the secrets come to light – Willow using magic on Tera, Buffy having been yanked out of heaven, Xander having summoned the music demon, Giles leaving. Looks to be a pretty full episode.

And not to give any spoilers out, but did the end of tonight’s episode piss anyone else off besides me?

No! Not at all. Why would it piss me off? I liked the ending.

I wasn’t particularly surprised. They’d sort of been dancing around (pardon the timely pun) the whole thing for a while. IMO.

Next week is gonna be choice.

Just got through watching my tape. I loved it. Seriously, completely loved it. Although the cast was clearly mixed in terms of singing and dancing ability, I think they adapted their parts very well to account for that. But what blew me away was the quality of the writing. The songs were chock-full of content, and had an amazing amount of very pointed humor. The convergence of Tara and Giles’ numbers especially impressed me; the realization that they were both alone, contemplating the same problems, revealed in the first note that Giles joined in on…

I don’t want to gush, here, but I tuned in for an episode which I saw as having serious shark-jumping potential, and instead saw half the problems I was having with the series resolved, and got a whole new taste of why I love this show.

And, I’m a sucker for musicals. Can’t help it. It’s genetic.

Off to watch it again.

It was a great episode. Very nicely not only in the singing and dancing category but also in how the episode advanced the current storylines. And as for being mad at the ending, naw. We all knew it was coming.

The show has finally picked sides in a Buffy fan debate that has been raging for some time. Of course those on the other side are angry, but we the Orthodox Buffy Lovers are vindicated. It has been shown that we can interpret the divine messages that the Holy One gives us through His sacred programming. It is now time to burn the heretics for daring to think it would be any different.

So basically I am totally un-pissed off by the end of the episode. I wonder however how much was the demon’s influence.

I have to say that I really liked the way Buffy’s last song and dance was done. Also the Tara song to Willow was great. I greatly enjoyed the increased level of sexual innuendo throughout the episode. All in all I was very pleased.

As a final note that is one powerful demon. Nothing this big magically has happened since Jon’s spell. Now I wonder if Adam would have burst into song or not. That would have been a sight to see.

Actually, I was desperately hoping that it wouldn’t happen. The whole notion just doesn’t ring true for me, in many, MANY ways.

Ditto for the similar development over in Angel-land.

I have been having to restrain myself from starting a "** Anthony Stewart Head Totally Rocks My World** " thread… and tonight I nearly peed myself! Marsters is lovely and choice…but Head knocks me out in very down-to-earth, real way. Marsters is so beautiful he’s kinda untouchable. Head is so touchable it gives me stomach ache. I was literally writhing around on the couch when he was singing…

Oh, yeah, there was more than just Giles… I thought it was terrific. They pulled off every bit of it. I hate musicals, but the context, the writing, it all worked. Loved the whole thing.

ESPECIALLY the ending! Are you kidding me? had to happen!

PS: Learned something slightly disappointing but somehow unsurprising… SMG is evidently a bitch on wheels IRL. Oh well.

I must say, I loved the musical. Even though Xander and Anya can’t really sing or dance worth a damn, theirs was one of the funniest acts in the whole show. Spike’s was less powerful than I thought it should be, and it kind of contradicted the end. I think Dawn should be shot in the face. Giles has an awesome voice, and does great. Willow’s and Tara’s song was particularly sweet, and showed a great shot of Tara’s cleavage. I think the show would be better without Buffy, to tell you the truth. But that’s just my opinion. She’s my least favorite character.
Spike == Xander > Giles > Willow > Anya > Tara > Dawn > Buffy

I found the episode to be rather uneven. I was literally squirming with delight at Anya’s rocked-out bunny moment, then found myself left very cold by her and Xander’s duet, although I warmed to it toward the end. Giles’ number about leaving was good, Willow and Tara’s duet was great and the theme’s being echoed in Tara’s solo was heart-rending. I thought, given talk in another thread about big plot developments in the last ten minutes, that Giles AND Tara were going to be off to England. I really liked that “touched the fire” song. The revelation of who summoned the demon was ridiculous. Given the events of, oh, the last six years of his life, I don’t believe Xander would summon a demon for any reason, and his “I just wanted to see if we’d have a happy ending” motive? WTF? Definitely agree that the kiss at the end is going to be on Buffy’s part demonic influence. I don’t think she’d let herself make the mistake of falling for another vampire. Unless she’s so desperate for sensation that she’ll let it happen.

SMG is a much better singer than I thought she would be. Ditto for Michelle Trachtenberg and Anya (whose real name I can’t remember) ASH is always good. I thought Amber Benson wouldn’t be very good as I’d seen her in a Rocky Horror special and she tanked, but I was pleasantly surprised. The rest pretty much “slow-talked” their songs.

And yay, plot advancement! The look on Willow’s face when Buffy revealed she’d been in “Heaven” was priceless. I’m wondering if maybe the revelation and her reaction to it will later play a part when she’s deep into Bid Bad-dom.
