Just curious. Does baring it all ever actually revive an actress’ career once it’s on the skids? I can’t think of any examples, but I’m not much of a pop culture guru.
Revive a career? None that I can think of off-hand. But provide a nice influx of money? Yes.
Although one can say it started Pam Anderson and Jenny McCarthy’s careers (not that Jenny has much of one left now, but I’'m sure she still has lots of money.) And there are women who’s careers it certainly didn’t seem to hurt, like Shannon Elizabeth (though not like she’s a mega star, but still doing work,) and Shannon Doherty (she was fired from Charmed a couple years after her shoot, but it was unrealted. She’s just a giant bitch.)
And then there’s the women who it didn’t help at all, yet at the same time they were already on their way down, so it might have appeared to hurt them. Like Tia Carrera and Charisma Carpenter (though there’s still time for her to get back into the game.)
And then, of course, there’s the “I’m already washed-up, and several hundred
thousand or a few million could really help the bank, so sure, here are my titties,” like Debbie Gibson and Julie Brown.

I don’t think appearing nude has any effect at all on an actress’s career, positive or negative. Many of Hollywood’s biggest female stars have never done any nudity, but just as many (Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Drew Barrymore, Kate Winslet, Meryl Streep) have, and barring some strict statistical analysis I’m sure someone will someday do, I don’t see them working less often for any less money.
If a formerly famous actress appears naked in a direct-to-video flick, the story isn’t her nudity, it’s that she’s appearing in DTV. Is she any better off if she’s appearing fully clothed on Lifetime TV movies?
Usually, actresses pose for Playboy on their way down (Think Dana Plato or Victoria Sellers). A few have used Playboy to turn a stalled career into a thriving one (Kim Basinger, Sharon Stone, Drew Barrymore). Rare, but it happens.
A lingerie spread in Maxim is more of a win/win for young actresses, apparently.

I think the reason actress do nudity who haven’t before is that, while it only sometimes does good, it rarely does any great harm (unless, say, you’re currently working for a PBS kiddie show). The great example would be Jennifer Connolly, who bared her bodacious ta-tas a lot in various films and yet still grabbed an Oscar for her work in “A Beautiful Mind.” She did a nude lesbian dildo scene in “Requiem for A Dream” prior to the Oscar, and that didn’t hurt her career at all. (Granted, it was an anti-drug scene and some say the dildo-in-pussy scene was doubled, but she was definitely kneeling naked on a platform with another woman for some shots).
Also, “Embrace of the Vampire” did probably boost Alyssa Milano’s career, getting her back into the public eye after her TV childstar career was fading.
I think the laddie mags are also a good route, but it’s not really nudity so it doesn’t have the same impact culturally. I’m pretty sure Gellar has already been to that well, anyway.

It can get people talking about it, as if it’s some sort of scndal, which means publicity. Also, it can help a childhood actress get rid of the squeaky-clean nice girl image*. That’s why I didn’t say Lindsay Lohan. She’s already demonstrated that she’s not the little innocent that she used to be. She did it with her personal life, which is probably not the way to go.
*At least that’s how it’s supposed to work. I have no idea if it actually does.
