Bugles are 50 Years Old!

They’ve been celebrating this fact since January, I guess, reminding everyone in big bold print right on the bag. I hadn’t eaten those things in years and had some fond memories of those things – y’know…sticking them on each finger and biting them off one by one… delicous salty crunchy puffy light snacky…

They were on sale at the store and, out of (discounted) nostalgia, I bought a bag.

I gotta say, they were kind of…

.GROSS!

I think Imight have gotten an original bag from the original production run. That or they’ve changed the recipe in recent years (decades?). That or I discovered just why I stopped eating them so long ago.:frowning:

Anyone else rediscover one of those “Awesome” foods of yesteryear and realize it doesn’t live up to the fond memory?

—G?

Certainly on the lower end of the snack scale. I haven’t had one since they were 35 years old, but I was never that huge a fan.

Bugles never had much taste except salt. I haven’t bought any in at least 10 years. They used to have them in the vending machines at work. I bought them a few times when the machine was out of other items that I preferred.

When they finally go to The Great Convenience Store in the Sky, will Taps be played?

Eh, I like them. But I guess all you folks who don’t are the reason I occasionally see a remaindered lot of them in the discount grocery store, so thanks, I guess.

I like 'em just fine! I would agree, they’re a little oily (so are Fritos.) But the taste, and the delicacy of the crunch, are tops with me. If someone doesn’t want theirs, hand 'em this way!

Bugles are still around, but they debuted along with another instrument snack. They didn’t last so long- drums, maybe?

Good lord. I see this thread and Video Killed the Radio Star runs through my mind.

Whistles.
From here.

I wish they’d bring back Baked Bugles. They had them for awhile as a low-fat alternative. The regular ones are too damn greasy for me. I’d eat them, but the grease makes me nauseous.

As a preteen, I ate too many greasy Bugles and had some acid reflux. I’ve never touched one since.

I remember now. One night my folks came home from the grocery store with both. Whistles were just hollow cylinders.

I loved cheese Bugles, but they don’t seem to sell them near where I live.

I thought there was gonna be some cool trivia, like they were klaus meins back up band in hamburg germany watching the quarrymen play in beer dives. :o

All such snacks are salt delivery systems. Some do it better than others.

My preferred SDS is plain ol’ potato chips, no flavoring (aka “bad tasting salt”). But the primo style (kettle chips or Cape Cod) are even better!

Never heard of Amazon? Or do you prefer them “fresh”?

If my recollecting powers are pulling up accurate memories, the one of the three that they originally really really PUSHED on TV commercials and whatnot was those Daisies. Nearly all the ads were for Daisies, with a rapid-fire announcerspeak afterthought at the end that Whistles and Bugles also existed from the same nice folks.

Interestingly, it appears to be the least successful of the three. (When was the last time you bought a box of Daisies?)

I can say that I was one of the first Americans to try Bugles before they were generally released. Our next door neighbor was a market researcher and she was sent a huge box of various snacks to hand out and get reviews. She rounded up all the neighborhood kids and we had a backyard party. There were three snacks to test - Bugles, which we all know, that were almost identical to their present form; Whistles, which were hollow crunchy tubes with a cheese taste (think hollow puffed Cheetos); and Daisies, which were shaped like a flower head and had a buttery taste.

Bugles were the clear winner among the kids, and sure enough, it was Bugles that survived past the first year on the market. The other two quietly disappeared in under a year, if I recall correctly. And yes, we did all put them on our fingers and pretend they were talons!

I considered Amazon, but the $6 shipping fee seems kind of ridiculous for a bag of chips.

Guessing no one here (besides me) has tried the caramel Bugles…cuz they are delicious.

You are so very welcome. But I am an inveterate consumer of Fritos, so it’s not like I can put on airs because of my taste. If anything, yours is more refined.
