Bugs in ears? The horror!

The worst earwig I’ve had was “The Ballad of Jed Clampett.” Once that starts playing in my head, there’s no stopping it.

AHH! There it goes again. “Come and listen to a story 'bout a man named …”

I thought it couldn’t happen until it happened to me twice in two weeks. I now wear earplugs to bed.

A friend of mine got a wood tick in her ear. It attached itself to a blood vessel and started sucking. She had to have a specialist remove it.

A friend of mine woke up with a bug in his ear. He didn’t know whether it crawled in or flew in though. When he pulled a wing out of his ear he immediatly went to the doctor who removed the rest. The doctor told him he wasn’t the first.

I hate you all. I woke up last night and a piece of my hair was tickling my ear. I remembered this thread and was so freaked out I had to get up and check my ears before I could go back to sleep.

You all owe me at least an hours sleep. :frowning:

I’ve had a bug in my ear twice.

When I was a kid my family was picnic-ing next to a stream where ladybugs were swarming and one of them flew into my ear. We went to the nearest hospital and the doctor flushed it out. It was a memorable experience.

Which was good, because years later when a beetle crawled into my ear one night as I was sleeping I immediately rushed into the kitchen and stuck my head under the tap. He popped right out.

These are memories that you don’t forget.

I’m not the only one…

Bugs in ears are pretty mild.

You haven’t LIVED until you’ve accidentally sucked one into your nose! I got some little thing in there once, and it HURT and it BURNED! Maybe it was shitting itself with fear, maybe it was trying to bite me, or eat its way out. I dunno. I couldn’t blow it out. The pain stopped fairly quickly, though. Maybe it drowned in my snot.

Maybe it’s still in there, in a snot cocoon.

You just keep telling yourself it was a piece of your hair, if that helps you to sleep tonight.

D&R

True… but if necessary, your finger fits up your nose.

Believe me, I tried mining for nose nuggets.

I have an irrational fear of this happening to me, even though it never has. Yet. I wear earbuds to bed just in case. I only wish they were a little more comfortable to sleep with.

Still harder than sticking it your ear

Sandflea flew straight in my ear and bit nicely somewhere deep inside while I was at attention during CO’s inspection at Parris Island.

I meant easier. :smack:

Years ago, my brother and I were motorcycling to our folk’s house when a few miles short of the destination he suddenly slowed and began riding erratically. We got to the house, Mike leapt from his bike and started jumping around. A gnat had flown into his right ear, one of the tiny, high-pitched buzzing ones. He was nearly in tears by the time I thought to shine a penlight into his ear. The bug flew to the light, and Mike nearly collapsed. Said it was horrifying and miserable, I believe him!

Lying in bed one night. Suddenly I had the most astounding, horrifying, thundering noise in my ear, accompanied by a really nasty squirming sensation. A moth had flown in. (Why? No idea. The lights were out and I’m under no illusions that my brain shines out of my earholes.)

We tried all sorts of things to get that moth out. None of them worked; it had gone in deep and couldn’t get out again by itself.

I went to the after-hours emergency medical centre. (All the time, listening to the occasional hysterical outburts of escape ettempts in my ear.) A nurse at the centre, and later a doctor, also tried various manoeuvers to get the damn thing out. Attempts included probing with various instruments, pouring in various substances, and even basic syringing, as one would do to remove earwax. No dice.

The only improvement was that, eventually, the moth died. Still in my ear, though. But at least they could send me home to get some sleep, with a referral to the local hospital the next day.

The next day, I trundled off the the hospital to see an ENT specialist. He listened to my story, laughed a bit, and then stuck something like a teeny-tiny vacuum cleaner in my ear. The body of the moth was gone in approximately two seconds.

Back while it was still in there, though, thrashing around … it was painless, but nevertheless one of the nastiest experiences of my life.

Sure, but never to the point where I needed to get emergency medical care…

My insect in ear story was quite uneventful - an ant wandered into my ear and then out again. My true horror story involved inhaling a blowfly. Which stayed put for 3 whole days - I just about coughed myself blue trying to dislodge it :eek::eek::(. So New years day 2010 I was out on a house boat with friends when I finally managed to cough up an enormous green gob  containing a 1 winged blowfly (charming I know). An hour later I coughed up the missing wing.
When you are gardening in Australia - KEEP YA GOB SHUT :smack::smack::smack:

I’ve slept for the last few days with my hair tied up so it won’t touch my ears. If I’m permanently scarred by this thread you’re all going down do you hear me! All of you!
