Buh-bye, Bush!

Who’s planning to watch Bush’s farewell address tonight? (And since when have Presidents – other than Washington, famously – made farewell addresses?)

I didn’t know there was one, but I will have to catch the recap on TDS/Colbert. I don’t think I can sit through one of his speeches (haven’t been able to yet). And his pathetic analysis of his own presidency in the clips I’ve seen just makes me angry. He gets to fuck up a country and kill half a million people, and just walk away free.

I think that all of them whose presidency didn’t end with death made them. You can find the last several on Youtube.

Huh. No shit.

Eisenhower’s farewell address, where he warned about the dangers of a military-industrial complex, is pretty well-known.

I won’t watch it tonight but I’ll watch it sometime tomorrow/this weekend. Listening to him on his farewell tour is like listening to your half crazy grandfather ranting about something, just nod and pat him on the head reassuring him that it’ll be alright. It doesn’t matter what he says now, so it’s just funny–but don’t laugh until he turns his back.

I NEVER watch him. Give me a “bury in manure” button on my remote control, then I’ll watch him.

3 minutes until the first invocation of 9/11, is that a record?

It was a completely self-congratulatory and deluded analysis of his 8 years in office.

Not all of them, it turns out. This article says that Bush the Elder didn’t give one but indicates that most Presidents do so.

I think he should just have an exit interview with HR and be escorted out of the building by security, just like any other employee you wouldn’t trust not to shred the files and reformat the hard drive.

That’s an interesting thought. Being president is a dangerous job:

“19% of US presidents died while in office. Half of these were assassinations! This gives an incumbent president a 9.5% chance, almost one chance in 10, of being murdered by a firearm while serving his term.”
