I’m hoping there are some books, blogs or forums out there where I can go and direct some new board members to go to book up on understanding how to serve on a condo board. I’m most interested in information on what financial controls should be in place and what documents the board should be getting from the management firm monthly and annually, and learning how to read such documents. Any tips would be welcomed! Thanks!
This may be only mildly helpful, but here goes.
I stumbled onto this woman’s site:
http://www.californiacondoguru.com/
She also has a blog and discusses different topics such as rules & regulations, board elections, etc. in terms of what the California law says. I’m in CA so it might be a little more relevent to me than you (since I don’t know where YOU are). She has also written a book, which I do not own.
I am not affiliated with her in any way, I just have an RSS feed of her blog on my Google page.
I’ll ask mrs.gnu, who works for an association management company. Definitely contact the management company and ask if they have any introductory materials. You’ll want the management contract, which should ID the documents they’re supposed to provide, and, of course, the CC&R’s, By-Laws, etc. (Which you should already have as a homeowner.)
Thanks. What’s a CC&R?
Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions - this is your HOA bible, and if you own a condo, you’ll become real familiar with it.
Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions. It sometimes goes by others names, though, look through the packet of documents you got when you purchased the home.
