Burger King Brings Back Yumbo Sandwich

Ok, I had one yesterday. It was actually pretty good. Subway doesn’t toast their buns before they make their sandwiches, and it was the toasted bun that made it work. The ham tasted decent. Overall I liked it.

The real reason Burger King brought it back is because of rising beef prices. Fast food companies are pushing chicken and ham products more because of a bigger profit margin. They don’t want to jack up the price of their burgers so they are pimping chicken nuggets and ham sandwiches.

OMG, I haven’t been to Jack in the Box since I was a kid. Do they still have that yummy Breakfast Jack?

I am not a burger fan but when it’s burger king, the I cant resist.I must try this variety sooner!

Really? Nowadays, Subway restaurants in Canada have a toaster for toasting your sandwich. I always get them to toast my bread before making an egg salad sub.

I could swear I remember Yumbos from later than 1974. I don’t think they were discontinued everywhere all at once.

I also remember George Will describing a probably apocryphal man who walked out of a Burger King rather than calling a ham-and-cheese sandwich a Yumbo as a “hero for our times”.

I had one last week, just to give it a shot, and I agree that for what they are, the price is a bit steep. I only ordered one, and it something like $3.69. It pretty much tasted exactly as you’d expect a hot ham and cheese from Burger King to taste: nothing great, but nothing terrible, either. If I wanted something along these lines, though, you get more bang-for-buck at Subway. Maybe if I had grown up with them, I’d be more favorable in my opinion (like if they ever brought back the McDonald’s cheddar melt, I’d be all over it.)

I am old enough to remember these but I don’t remember them. I was more of a McDonald’s kid though.

It looks like they are following the McRib model of bringing back an old favorite for a limited time.

Yes! And it’s even better if you have them substitute bacon for the ham! The crispy texture of the bacon really makes a difference.

I’d never heard of a Yumbo before (and I’m old enough that I was aware of fast food in 1974). It looked good when I saw the ad, so I had one yesterday.

It was okay. Not bad, not great. Just a typical ham and cheese sub sandwich. The American cheese made it a little different from the ones I normally order (with Swiss).

I don’t think I’ll get another one, though. If I’m at BK I’d rather have a Whopper.

They’re pushing a two-for-five-dollars special right now, so if you get a second Yumbo or another sandwich, you’d only pay $2.50 for it.

2 for $5? I think dinner is solved tonight. It’ll be my first since childhood.

I did see that upthread, Even so, at $2.50, it seems like a stretch. To me, it’s a dollar menu item. I’m not a fan of BK, but I’d go for the Whopper at price without a second thought.

We got 2 yesterday. They’re pretty good. Generous amount of ham. It’s like half a sub size, but pretty filling.

Called my mom and she got a couple for $5. She reheated one she bought yesterday in her toaster oven. She said that she liked it.

I can see sales dropping when the sale is over. $3.69 is a bit high for just half a sub.

I had one yesterday and I don’t see what all the hype is about. It’s just a ham, cheese and lettuce sandwich. Big whoop! Jimmy John’s and even Subway do it much better and cheaper.

I remember those! We loved them and re-created them at home (as best we could) with Buddig ham. They put lettuce on it now? Must remember to de-order lettuce if I get one.

Yep.

I wish mine had looked half that good.

It is 99% nostalgia. As I said up thread there were no Jimmy John’s or Subways when it came out (and even when it went away). It was different and a good change at the time.

Charlie Brown’s Christmas isn’t a great cartoon by today’s standards but tons of people watch it every year.

Hmmm. I looked at the picture and that’s not the YUMBO I remember. Back in the day they were on a nice soft hamburger bun and had only ham and cheese on them. No mayo or lettuce. And the ham was shaved, not sliced. I think I’ll pass on this version.

I don’t remember than at all and at the time I was (unfortunately) eating a lot of fast food. Carroll’s was our first choice but BK was a close second. Third was Burger Chef.
