Burned out, broken, lost, stolen, abandoned or upgraded?

My new in '86 answering machine with original magentic minicassette and a/c adapter began emnating a very disturbing humming noise the other day and when unable to find a replacement 14v a/c adapter of appropriate amperage, I finally broke down and bought one of those new-fangled digital ones.

I’ve got lots of elderly gadgets, gizmos and small appliances that still work, even the same pair of sunglasses for the past 19 years, and it occurs to me that I almost never upgrade anything before it dies or is lost or stolen. I have replaced the blades on a blender twice, batteries on an inexpensive digital watch numerous times, had a vintage VCR repaired, a seriously out-of-warranty integrated amplifier and turntable repaired, am even contemplating having a 20 year old TV repaired and used other heroic means to keep cheap stuff alive a bit longer.

What causes you to end a “relationship” with your gizmos and such?
