Burning Man: Have any of you Dopers ever been there?

Burning Man is a annual alternative arts festival/experimental community. I would provide the URL but there is alot of nudity on the site, so I’ll leave it up to you guys to figure it out.

I was wondering if any fellow dopers have ever gone there before. What was it like? Was it worth the $100 or more admission fee?

I plan on going there next year, so I’m gathering info right now about it.

I’ve read some accounts of life at Burning Man. If you’re into performance art, or big showy artwork that makes A Comment, it can be very entertaining. Likewise, if you’re into walking around scantily-clad in the desert, there are worse places to go.

For my money, I’d rather spend a week on the beaches in Southern California.

I just read that all vending is banned :frowning: I was hoping to at least break even for the vacation :frowning:

Oh well.

My cousin went. I saw pictures at Thanksgiving.

No, not those kinds of pictures. Now that I read the description,. Glad she didn’t tell us what the thing was really about.

I’ve been close to it. Well I actually rode past it in 01. It’s amazing how many cops they can have in the middle of nowhere, and Gerlach is 70 miles from anywhere. I can’t tell you much more about it then that excpet the gas prices when I was there was 2.10 or so, the highest in my round the country trip except maybe in Nebraska.

A couple of past threads on the subject:

Any Burning Man participants here?

Who’s going to Burning Man???

Hey I was going to ask this question a few days ago. I’ve seen a documentary on it and have always wanted to go. It looked neat on tv, and I look forward to it when I get to that part of the US.

Yep, my best buddy went a year or two back. He said it’s everything it said it was and more. If you you can go, go!

One of my best friends never misses a year. It’s an event that she participates in heavily and is a really important retreat for her.

My take on it is: A lot of love going around and anything goes. I mean that very sincerely and not smarmy. From what she says, there is a plethora of things to amuse and relax and always “safe” loving people to chill out with. If you want to go and be sexual and nude, that’s fine. If you want to go and be clothed and introverted, that’s fine. There are many, many different camps – some go all out with their cuisine and others do the basics.

A word of caution: from what she says, it can be a really intense experience that doesn’t necessarily translate into the “real world” (the closest I can equate to this is bonding with someone/people during a crisis and then having it be a bit awkward when crisis is over), but the friendships she has derived from the experience are probably life-long and she loves it.
