Within clusters, an attempt was made to confirm at
least two reported non-infant deaths by asking to see the
death certificate. Interviewers were initially reluctant to
ask to see death certificates because this might have
implied they did not believe the respondents, perhaps
triggering violence. Thus, a compromise was reached
for which interviewers would attempt to confirm at least
two deaths per cluster. Confirmation was sought to
ensure that a large fraction of the reported deaths were
not fabrications. Death certificates usually did not exist
for infant deaths and asking for such certificates would
probably inflate the fraction of respondents who could
not confirm reported deaths. The death certificates were
requested at the end of the interview so that respondents
did not know that confirmation would be sought as they
reported deaths. We defined infant deaths as deaths
happening in the first 365 days after birth. Violent
deaths were defined as those brought about by the
intentional acts of others.

I’d wager the typical Arab has a better idea of the reality in Iraq than any sheltered, self-censoring coward in America does. At least they know the news they get is propaganda, unlike (say) the typical Fox News viewer…

Well the typical Arab, at least in Yemen, is illiterate and gets his news from down at the local mosque heavily interpreted by the local cleric therein. So, unless you consider the US equivalent, eg. someone like Jerry Falwell, as a good source of news, I think I’d win any wager you care to make in this regard.

This “it’s disprespectful to show war dead” attitude is just like the “don’t criticise the president when we are about to go to war” attitude. Very wrong and very, very dangerous.

Some folks seem to have no problem with giving their leader carte blanche to do anything military without political fallout. I have trouble thinking of anything more dangerous.

Well, the “typical Arab” does not live en masse in Yemen at remote locations without acces to electricity = no TV locations.

What I find always so fascinating about those who are in my region of the world to make money, is the denigrating tone when they start talking about “the locals”.
My dear fellows, if staying in an environment filled with such illiterate, stupid, backwards , uninformed people is such a hardship and so unbearable for you that you need a message board to talk about your pain, then why on earth do you stay there?
Why on earth don’t you pack your bags and run back to where you are at home, where everyting is so literate, so sofisticated, so extremely just and well informed that half of the voting population wants to give their vote to a criminal mass murderer and that surveys show that these literate, sophisticated well informed voters have no clue about who and what they actually vote for.

My post was in regards to the comment people who watch Fox news don’t know it is propoganda and that the ‘typical’ Arab knows the news he gets is… So, if literate people (most who do watch Fox news in the US would probably qualify) can’t tell what is propoganda why would the poster, or you, suppose that illiterate people watching the same TV would have a better chance of knowing what propoganda is (most of whom support their own criminal mass murderers)?

Your region of the world? What, by divine right? If I live somewhere then that is MY part of the world, too.
I am in the desert, but I don’t stick my head in the sand and ignore the reality of where I work. If I hated it here I would leave. I don’t so I stay.

At least they can vote. I’m sure Saddam would have honoured a vote that elected someone else other than him like GWB most likely will if he is tossed out, mass murderer not withstanding.
