I hope not. If I were a registered republican I’d vote for McCain. I don’t agree with all of his policies, but I respect him, and I think he actually does have some intelligence, savvy, and integrity. The reporters love him because he will talk about this politics for hours in detail, while Bush can only deliver the soundbites fed to him by his steering committee. It makes me sick…
Bush seemes offended that any one would question him. There’s a lot of shit in that family going way back. Can’t hide it.
And, Bush may win because, sadly, most people in this country don’t bother listening, really listening, to the candidates at this stage of the game. By the time the get around to paying any attention, it’s all said and done.
Side line - now there are accusations about Gore smoking pot.
Alan Keyes?
Nah.
The Republican party has demonstrated over and over that they’re terrified of losing the racist vote.
Uke
There is something to like in all the candidates in my book. But the only one I see as being “presidential” is “Dubbya.” (And I don’t mean “presidential” in the way Slick Willy has redefined it. - I mean a deep respect for the office like Reagan had.) It takes political savvy to be president. I don’t see that in McCain. He’s a great senator, but I don’t see the presidentiality in him.
I can live with either as president, they both have their strengths and weaknesses and together would make, pretty much a complete ticket. But “Dubbya” has the political “air” about him that makes him better suited for the top spot. And, after all, the president is only as good as the people around him.
Looks like there’s a debate tonight on CNN, beginning at 7 PM EST, 90 minutes with the Republicans, 90 with the Democrats.
Personally I thought Keyes won the Republican debate here in Michigan a few weeks back. The rest of the candidates were almost like they were clones of each other, but then maybe that’s just me.
Good point there, MKM, about the presidential “air.” Let’s vote for the guy who most LOOKS like the President of the United States. Tall and Hollywood-handsome, with wavy hair. After all, it’s his handlers who make all the REAL executive decisions, right?
Reagan is the perfect example. He was great communicator, had great respect for the office he held and he had great ideas. But he left the details of getting those ideas into work to his key people. Very successfully in my book.

Right, the guy who was governor for 4 years has more political savvy than - nevermind.
Your a Reagonphile - why should I even acknowledge you? I mean, your idol is this craven fuck who illegally arranges to have hostages held until his inauguration to make the incumbent look bad.
In a forum that tries to get The Straight Dope, I’d assume you have some facts to back-up your claim?

Then why did you?
Did you sleep through the 80s?
Iran contra is a serious issue - by making a deal with the Iranians, GW Bush committed high treason, and essentially “threw” a national election.
He admited that he was at the meeting, and in the room with the Iranians. He said when the deal was made he was “in the bathroom”.
I don’t want to debate this issue here, that above is the version GW himself gave, and I think what you do with that info is you’re choice, HOWEVER I find it interesting that many Americans can actually pretend there wasn’t any sort of scandal, and I was once accused by a former colleague ofbeing a conspiracy theorist for acknowledging that the Iran Contra scandal EVER occured. Not whether he sold arms to Iran - BUT THAT THERE WAS A SCANDLA. Whatever.
Back on thread. The dems are sounding real stupid and bitchy in their debate, and the Republicans are cleaning upo their act, I sense some deal making in the works soon, it will shake out.
It’s not about who is best or who we want, but who can win. I mean, at least one will win, there is no “none of the above vote” - so why all the second guessing? Climbing on the bandwagon early and getting to say - “I backed the winner”, “I was right”, or maybe “I was loyal”…with hand out stretched.
I don’t get it either really. To tell the truth, if it comes down between Bush and Gore, I will vote Gore. If it was McCain and Anyone, I’d vote McCain. I don’t think Bush can take much of the swing vote at all in the national election, and it will be a mistake to nominate him. Bush is to far to the right, and to much a part of the old-boy system to get any new votes.
And he calls himself a man of the people.
A little Roman history would do us good. Casar was a “man of the people” - yet later claimed patrician status to justify his lust for power. Sounds familiar, hmmm
Last night’s exchange between Keyes and McCain was disgusting, about McCain’s teen-age daughter and what he would do if she got pregnant - vis a vis abortion. I haven’t been able to determine which daughter it was, the black one or the white one - yes it appears that McCain has an adopted African American daughter. She appears on the family portraits, and only the birth dates of the two daughters are mentioned. A really classy move to consider her as much of the family, and not mention adoption - I was impressed to see the pic on the website. (With all due respect in relpies does any one know if in fact McCain has an adopted child? I don’t want this to become a racial debate - I think it says a lot of good about him tho). If the daughter refered to is the African American, Keyes should be a political causuality.
A little research -
Meghan appears to be the teen-age daughter, she is white - the whole thing made me sick, especially the way Keyes kept harping.
Spit wads from the balcony man.
McCain has proposed closing virtually every tax loophole that made Dubya the man he is today. I don’t think that is sitting too well with Dubya right now. Elizabeth Dole seems like the logical choice for a GOP VP.
I have a feeling that someone in the DNC has some embarassing info on Dubya that is being kept under wraps until after or during the GOP convention. This is going to be a dirty race.
Hopefully the public is going to realize how important this particular election is. The next president will appoint up to four supreme court justices.
