Others think Bush should do something truly spectacular:
Like taking pity on Gore and just conceding the whole thing. Bush could quit like a man, having proved his point.

A surprise Bush concession, coming after Gore’s gracious concession speech Wednesday night, would send many pundits into sober reflection. They would soberly reflect about Bush’s deep abiding love of his country and of his political party–that special kind of Republican, moderate enough to remove his offending spine before taking office…

George, did you read that article? If so, is your monitor obscured by anything that might filter sarcasm and irony from ever reaching your eyes? For us sarcasm-unimpaired people, quotes such as:

are a dead giveaway that the author is using sarcasm. I offer my services if you need lessons on the identification of sarcasm, and tips on how to interpret it.

Clearly the post from xenophon41 is sarcasm, making a play on the whole concept that the prior post discusses.

(Thinking some members get way too wrapped up in this…)

Sarcasm - a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain.

Satire - a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn.

Irony - the use of words to express something other than and especially the opposite of the literal meaning.

xenophon41’s utterance, “Oh suuure you do” is pretty clearly an ironic utterance. As sarcasm goes, it was pretty obvious.

I did consider that the statement of **Gadarene[//b] might be an attempt at sarcasm, but since it fails to meet the definition, I discounted that, and took it at face value.

The second post from Gadarene is, I hope, intended as sarcasm; it clearly seems to meet the definition.

My first post was intended as self-aware irony–also known as playing the fool. Thought the more experienced Dopers 'round here would give me the benefit of the doubt and understand that I couldn’t possibly be that stupid.
