I dunno, what say you guys? Don’t you think he is being a little too hasty? Maybe we should wait for some more conclusive science on the subject. I think there might be 3 scientists somewhere in the world that still don’t buy the whole anthropogenic thing.
Yeah, that sounds about right. AGW will be the next president’s problem, and they will make every effort to study it for the next four to eight years, and come 2016, the US will still have no particular programs in place to reduce their emissions in spite of the fact that the US is one of if not THE biggest offender on the planet. Where’s a spitting with disgust smiley when you need one?
I’m sure there will be some VERY comprehensive programs in place with which companies may voluntarily comply. And if they don’t comply, there will be some congressional hearings at which VERY strong words will be directed at the CEOs of said companies. And not much else.
Not a comment on Bush’s speech per se but a touch of humor: There’s a flat-screen TV in a public area of my office building, that has traditionally been turned on to CNN or the like all day. It’s been off for a month or more.
Today, someone turned it on. To watch the coverage of the Pope’s visit or something, I imagine.
Well, I found out why it’s been turned off. The color display is GREEN…
The way a TV would look in the Emerald City. The way a TV would look viewed through a sheet of lime Jello.
As I walked past it, at one point, however, a report on the president’s speech was about to begin. The lead-in?
GREEN BUSH.
Nobody who saw me walking down the hall after that understood why I was giggling.
OP: How do you manage to afford living with near zero impact on the environment? Do you work from home? How do you communicate with the outside world? How are you posting this?
I want to do my part to stop climate change, so could you PM or email me instructions? I’m so sick of the folks that bitch about everything, but still drive cars, use computers, etc.
Likewise, I am deeply sick of people who use the silly assed argument that the only people allowed to have a derogatory opinion of our national environmental record are those who live off the grid. It is possible to have those things and still manage to reduce one’s carbon footprint.
Yes, but in order to save the planet, we are going to need to reduce U.S. impact to levels far below that of poorer nations to offset the carbon they are producing.
Perhaps we can send them plans for our glass houses…
A cite for what, exactly? That if China and other countries continue to pollute the air and we stop, that somehow, magically, the earth will get better?
No, to your earlier assertion. That we would have to reduce our impact levels to “below the levels of the poorer nations.” And second: Why make such a ridiculous assertion, anyway? Of course we wouldn’t be able to do it by ourselves. Does that mean we should do nothing?
I don’t like those “all or nothing” kind of arguments. Just because you personally can’t fix everything doesn’t mean that you should do nothing. There are many choices all of us North Americans can make that are good choices - washing clothes in cold water, taking a shower every other day, taking the grass out of your yard and replacing it with low water use plants, changing to those twisty bulbs, etc. The thing about most of the changes I’ve made in my life is that they are saving ME money, not just being energy efficient. My power bills go down when I wash with cold water and keep the temperature in my house at 18ºC. This is a many-faceted discussion; there is hardly any black-and-white to it.
China’s about to claim that title, if they haven’t gotten it already. Unless the good ol’ U.S. of A. get’s it’s shit together within a few years, we’re pretty much going to be as relevant as Russia was after the fall of communism (i.e., the only reason anyone pays attention to us is because we’ve got nuclear weapons).
