“Is there no adult supervision?” asked Rep. Gary L. Ackerman, D-N.Y. Hell, no, dude - this is the Bush Administration we’re talking about!
Does this qualify as “aid and comfort to the enemy” in the eyes of the wingnuts, or does that only apply to when lefties are critical of Bush’s prosecution of the GWoT or the war in Iraq? (Stupid question, I know.)
Given the serious shortage of trained Arabic translaters for the military and the state department, I’m not surprised that they can’t find any. Assuming they even have the brains to look, which may be crediting them with more than they deserve.
The logical response to not having enough translaters to vet their material is – shut down until you can get them. At the very least they should have shut down after learning of the first incident, and remained off-air until they had the people and processses to prevent the next incident getting on air.
Par for the course. The board and management will all turn out to be big donors with family money who’ve failed in their personal careers, except for those who come from “political operative” jobs.
Well, actually, the “wingnuts” (as represented by the op-ed page of the Wall Street Journal), have been complaining about this vociferously. However, since they lay much of the blame on the new (since November?) new director, a former CNN producer, it seems unlikely that their views will find much sympathy here.
Any idea how long since the first incident got some press. The article mentions a December incident, but not necessarily that it was the first incident.
It seems to me rather disingenuous to blame CNN for the oversight failures of Al-Hurra news director Larry Register, just because Register used to be a producer at CNN.
Apparently Bush administration officials are the ones that have selected Register for this post, supported him against criticism, and not bothered to check up on his statements, so I’d say that they bear a lot more of the responsibility for his screwups in his current post than CNN does.
Karen Hughes - wasn’t she one of Bush’s ‘close advisor/friend from Texas’? that quit her post to spend more time w/her family? or am I misremembering my Karens?
She was, but now she’s been tasked with trying to generate a more positive view toward the west from international minds, formally titled as undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs.
On the other hand, the behavior cited in the OP would go a long way toward proving to the Arab world that Al-Hurra isn’t just a paid mouthpiece for the Bush administration.
