But I don't have much to add to my OP!

Dopers all,

I just started two threads in GQ and I don’t have much to add to to those posts, I’m a bit concerned as there was a Pit threat about a Poster who does not seem to visit xis posts after xe makes them. I genuinely don’t think I have anything to add to my posts although I am very interested in what other Dopers will have to say.

It’s always polite to re-visit your threads, if only to say “thanks for your insight."

Both of the threads you started in GQ were moved out of there, so you might pay better attention to the descriptions of the various forums.

If you start a conversation people reasonably expect you’ll participate, if only to nod and say, “Indeed!”

You’d do as much in person I expect.

When you don’t it begins to feel like, we’re on the ragged fringes of, us participating solely for your amusement. Just sayin’!

Yeah, even after lurking a good while, I don’t always understand how did that post stay where it is and why do that other post get moved, valuable feedback.

Zuer-coli

Oh, good point.

Zuer-coli

Yeah, I did read some of the threads that got started by the person who was getting the pit, and it felt exactly as you say.

Zuer-coli

Both the threads I moved were about something only you had seen. Since nobody else on the board had actually seen them, we could only speculate on what they might have been. Since that’s a matter of opinion, I move them to IMHO.

In such threads, people often ask for clarification or a more detailed description. So you should keep an eye on them and respond to any questions.

I think it’s OK to start a thread without much clue as to your own views on the question - at least, I’ve done it before.

It’s often expected in GD that you’ll arrive with a firm view and argue your corner, but IMO, that’s dumb - not everybody is polarised like that - There are people out there who know that subject X has potential for a hot debate, and would like to participate in a discussion about it, but start with no particular stance on the topic.

However, if you’re interested in the topic, you should participate in the discussion. If you’re not interested in the discussion, why start the thread?
Unless it’s a poll - leaving a poll thread to run its own course seems OK, I think.

<bolding mine>

What fresh hell is this?.. :dubious:

Gender neutral pronouns. Ignorance fought.

Heh.

Speaking as someone who has on occasion been criticised for not posting again to a thread that I started (and then eagerly followed the responses to), I am conflicted. If a “thank you” is the only thing that I can post, I unneccessarily bump the thread and make others read it again uselessly.

If only there was a ‘post without bumping’ option available.

I agree. If you state your position carefully and succintly, there is no point going back and dealing with the nit-pickers and the bunch who keeps screaming “It’s apples and oranges” because they have no other sustainable argument.

However for those who start threads (which I don’t), it is not unreasonable to expect the OP to check and see if there are any requests for clarifications.

That’s exactly how you do it. You caught on quickly.

Thank you.

Zuer-coli

I wanted to avoid identifying the person who was being pitted so I used gender neutral pronouns.

Zuer-coli

Thank you to all who have taken their time to post.

It doesn’t seem as if folks reply to every post that is added to their OP, so the fact that i didn’t reply to everyone doesn’t signify that I didn’t give thought to the points made. The point about bouncing your own post just to say thanks has some merit.

So let the Doper jokes commence, well if you are so led anyway.
