But I don't WANT two pounds of cherries

I look forward to this time of year because cherries are the only thing from the fruits and vegetables category that I will eat. So why does the supermarket price them by the pound—but then only put them out in big plastic bags containing more than I’ll eat in two months?

You mean like they do grapes? I just pull out the grapes and put them in another bag until I get the amount I want. If the bags aren’t sealed, I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to do that.

I have no idea how I’m supposed to eat five pounds of clementines before they go bad.

At our markets, we generally have cherries heaped in compartments, and you put them in the bag yourself. Of course, this leads to some people eating cherries right there.

That’s what I do, too - I just load up one of the available plastic bags with the amount I want.

Just eat the damn cherries, you frickin’ pantload. Christ.

Next stop, MPSIMS!

Why, back in my day we didn’t even have cherries, we painted acorns red and ate them! Darn kids today.

Seriously, as mentioned above just grab a bag and buy the quantity you want. They are sold buy the pound, right?

Are you eating 2 cherries a day? I have to buy 2 of those plastic bags to last me one week – and that’s only if I stick to my limit of 40 cherries per day. But yeah, like everyone says, reload the bag to your specifications. They only bag them to keep people from the traditional cherry-picking.

I have frozen grapes before, to eat as sort of like hard candy. I have never frozen cherries but you could try freezing a few of them to see what happens.

hm, too much fresh fruit? small batch jams, sliced citrus fruits candied, clementinemarmelade, salt pickled citrus [can be lemons, limes, oranges]

Rumtopf, my personal favorite solution to too much fruit!

Let me join this rant to complain about the Makro discount stores in Thailand. I understand that buying in bulk leads to lower prices, partly because the store doesn’t have to unpack a box if you buy the whole box. But Makro wastes effort repacking articles into larger sizes. :smack:

Juice is repackaged into 6-packs. Uh … I wanted to buy 12 cartons of juice but, to cope with family differences, two apples, two tomatoes, three pomegranates (my favorite), three oranges, and two mixed vegetables. I didn’t want six of the same juice. I’ll just go elsewhere and pay the extra 4 pennies per carton, but thanks anyway.

Or – perhaps silliest of all – they wrap small bottles of Liquid Paper into bottle pairs. :smack: My kids do go through a lot of Liquid Paper but would either open both bottles at once – once open, it dries quickly and becomes unusable – or would mislay the 2nd bottle.

Dude, you are missing out.

You had red paint and acorns? We just hit ourselves with rocks until they were bloody enough to look like cherries and ate THOSE.

I take it you’re not a Sam’s Club / Costco kind of guy?

First (maybe only) laugh of the day. Thanks for that.

Buy the cherries, take them to work and share them. Win/win.

If you eat two pounds of cherries in one sitting, a pantload is exactly what you will get in short order.

What an extreme life threatening problem to have, call the UN – this problem needs high priority solving at the G8 summit.

Well, the cherries lose.

I do that with grapes and cherries all the time. I’ve never once had a store employee say anything about it.

In rare cases when I’m all cherried out before I finish what I’ve bought, I pit the cherries and freeze them for later use in smoothies. I do the same with most fruits, actually. I’ve got little zipper bags of frozen strawberries, cherries, and plums, and two frozen bananas, just waiting to be smoothiefied.
