Okay, so I never actually heard of the place before they invited a kerfuffle. Apparently, shoving a meal into a cardboard cup was something some people thought was a good idea. (I suppose it is a step above Soylent.)
But now they’ve closed down because they also thought making a Facebook post about how pro-Trump and anti-(belief in) global warming they are, and it wentbadly.
The owners say they received harassing and threatening phone calls all weekend. If so, I hope those who made the calls are found and subject to whatever charges are relevant. Harassment and threats can’t be condoned.
A boycott, I could get behind. I wonder if the owners thought that posting that statement, when they probably derive a big chunk of income from college students, would be good for their business.
Neither of those links have the actual text of what they posted. Too bad, I’d like to know. Sounds like quite a screed. The second link had this amusing quote from some genius in the Pima GOP supporting Cup o’ Shit:
Interesting that they called it a meal in a cup when it’s nothing at all but your standard buddha or hippie bowl. I don’t suppose either of those terms would have appealed the owners.
I’m not sad that it was publicized and caused their business to close. However, people of all stripes need to stop with the harassment and threats. Calling the business to harass the employees is wrong. Threatening the place of business is wrong. Hard (for either side) to take the high moral ground when they spend so much time wallowing in the sewer.
ETA: The article linked in “went” has a screen capture of the post.
The first news link about the closing had the full post. Here is a direct link to the image.
(The most ironic part is near the bottom: “If you like this post, please share it with 5 friends and we look forward to your next visit! If you disagree with this post, please share it with 100 friends and we won’t be expecting you any time soon!”)
This is another one of those “How could they possibly think this was a good idea” stories. I mean, are they just trying to get more conservatives instead of liberals to go to their store? I just don’t get it.
That the True Silent Majority would rise up simply from having heard of their brave speaking-of-truth-to-power FB post and sweep the country right back to the MAGA days?
Well my duh. I thought the article had ended. So they basically said that if you disagree, go fuck yourselves. Those are some savvy businessmen right there.
Here’s something I don’t know how to properly parse. The middle third of the Facebook post read like this (emphasis added):
That lead-in (“don’t believe in or support”) is ambiguous for the “hate group and hate crimes” item. Please please please tell me that the author of the post meant “we don’t support hate groups and hate crime” rather than “we don’t believe hate groups and hate crimes exist.”
It’s also ironic that people are defending it on the basis of free speech, when the post objected so strongly to other people’s free speech (including NFL players, late night hosts, and celebrities).
While I don’t support harassment, I don’t have a problem with the fact that they ended up closing. They told people not to come if they disagreed with them politically, and to spread the word as widely as possible. :smack: I do feel sorry for the employees who lost their jobs because of their employers’ stupidity.
What do you mean by “cash out”? How does a huge amount of negative publicity increase the value for a potential buyer? (They will undoubtedly have to change the name.) It’s not like they can collect insurance on the decreased value.
Perhaps they were just tired of the amount of work involved in running the restaurant, and thought that (figuratively) blowing it up would let them establish a successful career as a public speaker on the right-wing circuit.
Remember, the most likely correct to answer to the question “Why would they do that?” is “because they are stupid”, not “because they had a master plan to become rich/famous/powerful” (although they could have had a stupid plan to become rich/famous/powerful).
