It’s unarguable that Nixon quit. He did it because he knew he would be impeached and, most likely, convicted (even his biggest defender on the Watergate committee – Edward Gurney – said he would have voted for conviction). Nixon knew that the trial would be bad for the country, so he accepted the inevitable (and probably was thinking about his future – he’d do better if he resigned than if he were the only president removed from office).
I think the proper etiquette in the case of Ms. Palin is to refer to her as Governor, but make “air quotes” when saying it. Rolling of the eyes is optional.
