Butcher coat fad in the '30s?

I used to work with a guy who was in the USAAF in WWII, which would mean that he was a teen in the late-'30s/early-'40s. I think he was from New York, but I’m not sure. He told me once that it was a fad for hip teens to wear white butcher’s coats (The coats were white; not necessarily the butchers) with slogans written on them with black marker (or whatever was used as a marker back then).

Has anyone heard of this?
