Butler who saw racial history being remade

Warning-you’re gonna need some kleenex!

Eugene Allen worked for eight presidents-from Truman through Reagan-and saw history in the making. His story is particularly touching and a good sort of “behind the scenes” look into the White House.

That’s a wonderful and sad story.

For heaven’s sake. After this week, I’m going to need an infusion to cope with the dehydration.

That was a really powerful story. Thanks for posting it!

That’s such a sweet and sad story. His sweet Helene wasn’t there to experience history with him. :frowning:

Didn’t see that wrap up coming. Damn.

Very nice story, with such an understated way of reminding us that Bess Truman was apparantly a worthless sack of human excrement.

But on the other hand, another reminder of what a class act Jerry Ford was and an unexpected nod to the Reagans. I wonder about his memories of Nixon.

And I’m pretty sure Helene knows. God bless her & Mr. Allen.

I seem to have something in my eye sniff

My allergies must be acting up ::sniff::

Wow, what a surprise ending.

The butler did it

Oh Jesus Christ, I can’t even see I’m crying so much.

Please tell me Obama has called this man…

But a wonderful piece, absolutely.

I guess I’m a pansy again.

Great story. Did not make me cry though.

But…

The underlying theme for me is that this is one of the first of the new messages that, like the butler in the story, it is okay to vote for race, just because… Or because it might be ‘historical’ according to now , which usually means that in latter times, is was not so much…

Ya, I’m a cynic when it comes to the press, the timing, etc.

Still a better thing to post about the 90% of thee things that are posted about on the SDMB.

YMMV
