Actually, tourism to the US is down. The Spanish tourist industry and luxury shops are kind of very grateful to the Orange Alien but don’t want to say it too loud in case he decides to hit our food exports to the US with more tariffs.

(We’ve surpassed the US in number of foreign tourists and now stand second only to France).

Every syllable of my post was dripping with sarcasm directed against Trump and his Party. The tourists were there just “to see the Statue of Liberty before it’s torn down.”

Rich people don’t sulk, taking their balls and going home. They don’t John Galt, for the simple reason that they can’t. They need use plebes to make money off of. They sulk, and then they maximize their profit under the new rules, just like always.

True. “Right sizing” the workforce is often their first measure of profit maximization strategies. I’m not suggesting nothing can or should be done. I’m saying it will inevitably come at a cost to the middle and working class. It always does. Which goes back to higher taxes on the wealthy and large corporations. Now will that lead to a market melt down? If the economy is set for a “correction” every conservative will put the blame on the higher tax policies of the new Dem administration, not the ‘sulky profit maximizing’ measures of the wealthy corporations and investors.

Except if the middle class is destroyed, who’s going to buy all those auto/refrigerators/whatever the robots are producing? Or, in a service economy, who’s going to brew up their espresso? The uber-rich are going to wind up like the proverbial New England village in winter where the economy is the same slowly circulating five dollar bill, only it’ll be a $5-billion EFT.

That would involve them thinking more than one quarter ahead, and that’s not going to happen.

Also, they are the smartest capitalists, the other (less smart) ones will keep people employed to buy their stuff.

I’ve personally known several “whores,” both Filipina and Indonesian, and while there were opportunistic, shallow individuals among them, others were trying to escape abuse or provide for impoverished families.

The latter, of course. Epstein had a decent IQ, from most accounts; he would have made sure that heads of major corporations with an influence on news–not just the networks and newspapers themselves, but also the investors in same–would have been compromised. Politicians too, of course.

Whoever is holding onto that evidence (William Barr at a guess) has no incentive to give up the leverage it provides by releasing it publicly. And the major journalistic outfits will cooperate by making sure no enterprising reporters try to establish the facts of what happened to that evidence.

I think it is possibly some version of this story:

It’s a slow day in some little town……..
The sun is hot….the streets are deserted.
Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit.

On this particular day a rich tourist from back west is driving thru town.
He stops at the motel and lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night.
As soon as the man walks upstairs, the owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.
The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer.
The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill at the feed store.

The guy at the Farmer’s Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her services on credit.
She, in a flash rushes to the motel and pays off her room bill with the motel owner.
The motel proprietor now places the $100 back on the counter so the rich traveler will not suspect anything.

At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, picks up the $100 bill, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money & leaves.

NOW,… no one produced anything…and no one earned anything…however the whole town is out of debt and is looking to the future with much optimism.
