Buttering corn on the cob w/bread and butter: movie?

I swear there was a supper scene in Flashdance where they were using bread and butter to butter their corn on the cob. Is this true? Where can I find this scene? My Dad insists that it was in Ferris Bueller’s Day off. He is dead wrong.

It might be Peggy Sue Got Married.

Bueller in a different movie. In War Games Matthew Broderick’s character’s father does it. He puts a huge layer of butter on bread and everyone else thinks he is going to eat it. Then he butters the corn on the cob with it.

Hey, you’re right, Don’t Ask; I also think it happened in Flashdance, though. Anyone? Anyone?

See I thought it was from the Falcon and the Snowman. It was definitely a father of one of the principals and I remember the camera sort of lingering on that shot and me thinking to myself, “that’s not a bad idea on how to do it.”

Not that I butter corn on the cob that way. Like most refined individuals, I slice the corn from the cob and then apply butter which I know some view as a sin against nature.

Oh well.

It was Wargames.

I have seen all of the aforementioned movies and honestly can say I do not remember seeing anybody butter corn … but in my defense perhaps it is because that is precisely how we have always buttered our corn on the cob ever since I can remember, so I probably wouldn’t notice it because I am accustomed to seeing it done that way.

As far as I know, it is a perfectly logical way to butter corn, you don’t drip melty butter all over everything, and you still have your piece of bread to eat in the end =)

I need to have mrAru stop on the way home and get some fresh corn before we run off to germany tomorrow!

The movie was Breaking Away (1979). Paul Dooley, who plays Dennis Christopher’s father, does it at dinner.

I think Ronald’s got it.

Can anyone back me up on the Flashdance thing or, at least, give me a link to the War Games scene? At the very least, I have to prove that it wasn’t FB’s Day Off.

Here it is at 5:40. (BTW, I can’t imagine where it would be in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as the only meal I remember is the fancy sit-down dinner in the snooty restaurant.)

BTW, judging by the plastic yellow tub, the dad in Wargames is buttering the bread with margarine.

I LOVE that scene in Wargames, it’s just so bizarre.

Thanks, DF! This corn is RAW!

O.K., am I misremembering the scene in Breaking Away? Does anyone remember for sure whether it happens it that movie, too?

Definitely War Games, but maybe Back to the Future also?

Joe

Funny, I remembered the scene exactly including “this corn is RAW!” with the right dad, but my brain inserted Broderick’s Ferris Bueller mom.

I recall as a kid having dinner at someone’s house where they were using a shaving brush to butter corn.

That is a brilliant way to do it.

“Buttering your corn” as a euphemism also makes much more sense that way.

Best way to butter corn.

My grandmother would premix butter with pepper and other spices so a single application got everything you might want evenly onto the corn.

And then you had a pretty tasty piece of bread as well.
