buttonjockey308 - astounding ignorance

On this board (in this thread) I just saw a piece of ignorance and arrogance which motivated me to register…

There are no words. Did you know that almost a million Polish people have immigrated to the UK in the last few years, and that we are in the middle of the biggest inward migration in our history?

To your credit, you do the old ‘ignorance fought’ thing later on in the thread, but your ignorance here really is culpable, on a par with thinking the Sun revolves around the Earth. How on earth someone can both have a functioning internet connection and believe that noone’s trying to get into England, Paris or Germany is beyond me. It belies a stunning arrogance and closed-mindedness.

This quote is from a post where you lament that people don’t sufficiently respect America. Want to know why? Look in the mirror. I’m sure you’re a nice guy, but for fuck’s sake… there’s a whole world out there.

No, silly. The sun doesn’t revolve around the earth–it revolves around America.

Jeesh-- I thought everyone knew that.

Dern furriners…

Woo-Hoo! My first pitting! Ok, it’s weak, and I’m sure I’ve said something dumber and more pit-worthy before, but still.

Still, I admitted my ignorance. Mea maxima culpa, Mr. Foreigner. Didn’t mean to be overly proud of the country I’m from.]

Thanks for the pitting though.

You’ve been very honourable about it, I appreciate that.

But (as you know) the pitting isn’t about you being proud of your country

He’s got a point, though. The English seem to be leaving England as fast as possible.

We are? This is news to us, we assure you.

ETA: and even if we were, we would be doing it at no more than 55mph in order to gain maximum fuel efficiency.

Including me! But this is hardly new - we’ve always been maritime, and in the past did manage to populate a colossal empire, besides providing much of the core population of today’s Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

And no, he does not have a point. He claimed that noone was trying to immigrate to England, something demonstrably, and obviously, false.

Plus ca change.

If this genteel pitting is an indication of things to come, then welcome to the boards tokaido-hokuriku. Are you currently traveling the highway? Hokuriku-chihou is quite the detour

Goddam Brits, with their goddam frenchy talk. Speak american, dammit!

5.5 m Britons live abroad. That’s 10% of the population.

I’d live there, if you all would have me, but you don’t want me. Guess I’ll go eat worms and stick to visits…

Man, I’m surprised you even felt this little pebble under your feet.

Hell, you’re probably in your bunk now. You get your rest.

Well, I would think that Noone was trying to get into England, at least when he visits family, although, depending on his passport, it is probably not a problem.

Um, let me get this straight.

Without beng bitchy about it, he admitted his mistake as soon as he was called on it. He was wrong, and he readily conceded that fact. Plus, it was in a Pit thread, so if you really felt the need to rub it in, you could have done it there. You haven’t really claimed otherwise.

So then, remind me again why it was necessary to not only start a thread over this, but to register for the SDMB specifically to do so.

This isn’t so much a pitting of him (as you say, he admitted his mistake) as an expression of shock/surprise/horror at the existence of such ignorance from an apparently-educated citizen of a rich country.

tokaido-hokuriku

You couldn’t have just said, “Wow, I am shocked and surprised that such ignorance from an apprently-educated citizen of a rich country would say that,” in that thread you linked?

You’re pitting at a rate of once a day. I wonder how long until you collect the most Pit OP’s in the forum.
Makes me wonder who does have the lead though. I remember tamely teasing Liberal earlier this week for having started somewhere around 145 of them.
Brb, I have spare time on my hands.

Really? Whenever anyone here finds out I’m from America they always say. “Why did you move here?” in tones of disbelief. I’d say a good 30% will make a comment later in the conversation about how much they’d like to move to America.

Maybe I’m just in a rotten part of England.

That’s not a rate of departure, though, is it?

And Darkhold, as a Londoner I couldn’t possibly comment.

I think you can chalk a lot of this up to a British love of complaining, which doesn’t necessarily reveal that much.

Think of it like all those Democrat losers (not that all Democrats are losers, just these guys) who were ‘going to move to Canada’.
