Buying a dog- advice, experiences desired

Please don’t turn this into a debate about purebreds vs. mutts. I know what I want and am asking for advice on how to get it. And what is this euphemism “adoption”? As opposed to what, impregnating a dog myself? As a responsible pet owner, I spay/neuter my animals and do not abandon them on country roads. Unwanted dogs are not my concern or responsibility.

Don’t burning him.

Damn, if you could figure out how to do puppy invetro for a human, you’d make a fortune!

Seriously, adoption is for animal shelters/rescue centers, etc and buying is from breeder. Typically. Most people say “rescue” when they mean adoption. Lots of dogs are rescued. You only need to look at pasadosafehaven.org to realize the difference of picking out a nice adoptable dog and rescuing an animal from atrocious conditions.

Preparing to duck here: you did ask for folks in the OP: “Because of health problems, I’m leery of getting a rescue dog. If you’d like to convince me otherwise, I’m willing to listen.” Adoptions, even if the dog is purebred, will not typically have papers.

Also, I’ve been told by people who actually breed and show dogs not to trust papers that are CKC (Continetal Kennel Club) if you really care about having a “pure” purebreed. They say that the AKC or the Canadian Kennel Club is has a much better reputation for actually checking to see that the dogs registered under their names are purebreeds. Either way, just be careful and ask the breeder you buy from about any health problems in their line.
And you did ask about rescues and helth issues, that’s why I was talking about rescues and healthy mutts! Sorry…there’s no reason to feel bad about buying a dog rather than adopting one from a rescue. You’re right, unwanted dogs are not your problem…I think a lot of us just get a little emotional over our furry four (or three, in my case) legged friends and the fate of others like them…

Oops. Sorry if I snapped. I saw the thread careening off the rails and overreacted. And I DO like the idea of getting a rescue dog, but it has to be a dachshund, and it has to be a puppy (beyond the regular emotional reasons, we have a cat, and I understand if they are not socialized to felines when young, they can’t overcome their instinct to chase any small, furry animal).

Updates:

sj2; I spoke to the breeder whose website you so kindly found, and, unfortunately, they only breed minis. :frowning:

However, I had a really good phone conversation with a breeder in New York, and we have a date next week. Here’s hoping it goes well.

greck, Elenfair, Laurasia, others; I’m obviously getting way ahead of myself here, but do any of you have any experience with earthdog trials or field trials? It sounds like it could be a fun activity.

Dumb question: I like to get around as much as possible by bicycle in the warmer months, is there a safe way to transport a dog on a bike?

RE: Riding with dogs on bikes question. You’ve got two options. In a basket, which depending on the dog, could work. Use a harness and secure the kid so they cannot jump out or invert themselves out.

My preference is the baby-huggy front pouch so the kid stays nice and close and won’t jump out. And PLEASE, in the car, don’t let them ride up in the back window. If you ever get into an accident, the dog will not survive.

Here is a link to one back carrier that belts into the car as well!

I hope you find your pup soon. Please keep us updated

Nope, never had any earth dog/field trial experience with my doxie. He’s way too dumb, to be honest. My friend had a Jack Russel that she took to a couple earth dog events. Her dog wasn’t good at it, but she sounded like she had a lot of fun just hanging out with the dog people. Doxies do have pretty good hunting instincts though…my dog has caught several rats in his lifetime, which we appreciated, especially when he caught one that had climbed into my mom’s bedroom window! If you get a puppy and you want to do earth dog trials, you should get in contact with a group or someone who does it to start training early! Good luck with the breeder!

Regarding Earthdog trials: If you’re going to do earthdog trials with a doxie, you better get yourself a breeder with dogs who compete and are active in the field  Proven studs and bitches make a HUGE difference in the offspring! Check out the US Dachsie club and ask about breeders. Go to a dog show or two. Some of the show breeders may well do earthdog trials themselves, or know the people who do. Go to an earthdog trial if you can (if you get DogFancy, or some of the AKC publications, you can find calendars of events – probably on the AKC website too)

There are also earthdog trial “magazines” and clubs. A quick google search will get you there.

Transporting a dog ON a bike is risky if you fall. There are dog “pouches” you can wear to transport a dog (like when you’re walking) so I guess if you really wanted to, you could do it that way. Still, I’d be worried…

I certainly wouldn’t RUN a dachsie with a bike… Tee hee… watch those little legs go!

If you want to chat about earth dog trials, or even on how to find a good breder, you can email me at elenfair at yahoo dot com!

Good luck with your search.

That’s a generous offer, Elenfair, and I may very well take you up on it.

One last bump for this thread. I came home last night with a 12-week old “wild boar” wirehair dachshund I christened “Sebastian”. I got him from the Kostic family in Kingston, NY, who were highly recommended by everyone who knew them. He has a championship lineage, but adorable little bow legs that keep him from being a show dog. He bonded with me quickly and is being a very Good Boy. I just wanted to thank everyone who took the time to post on this thread and to let you know all the annoyance has paid off.

Hi,

Not to rain on your parade at all- very glad you found what you were looking for. But with a short legged breed I’d be VERY worried about “cute little bow legs” and have a vet take a serious look at them. There is a condition, its name escapes me, but basically its when the legs are too crooked to support the weight of the dog (when its full grown). The legs have to be broken and reset by an orthopedic specialist- at the tune of about $1500 per leg. The dog has to wear a device/brace for months. The most common breeds I see this done with : Bassets and Doxies.

I am not a vet, just work for one- but I would be sure that the breeder is wililng to guarantee the health of this dog and specifically ask your vet about the possibility of the legs being an issue in the future.

This must say far too much about my mental state right now but I could have sworn this thread was “Burning a dog- advice, experiences”… WTF was I reading??

What is WRONG with me???

and you can make a “crime fighting dog” mask and cape very quickly from a black sock. (come over to the dark side of dog ownership.)

Best dog training book ever.
