Buying a level 2 charging station for an electric car

Yeah, i have many days when 15 miles is enough. And i was able to charge at my most common destinations.

It was pretty bad in the snow, though. My Subaru Forester is soooo much better at that.

My Subaru Crosstrek was a lot better in the snow than the Mazda sedan before it, but even with all-season three-peak-mountain-snowflake tires, it’s still gotten stuck a couple of times in heavy enough slush/ice. Nothing too bad; a shovel and traction pad managed to extricate us.

AWD can only do so much. Certainly it’ll be better than RWD on a front-heavy car, but it won’t magically provide traction if all the tires are on slick patches.

With the Solterra, I finally put proper snow tires on it (Blizzaks). Combined with its 1000 lbs of additional weight over the Crosstrek or Forester, I’m quite excited to see how it would perform in the snow. Except it’s almost January and we still haven’t gotten snowfall yet… it’s like three months late by now :frowning: I can still walk around in a t-shirt.

I’m still curious how a rebranded Toyota does vs a “real” Subaru. It does have X-Mode, but I feel like that’s just silly branding for the standard computerized traction control that every SUV has now.

Depending on your climate, level 1 charging can be pretty inefficient. When the temperature drops, a certain baseline amount of energy is needed to keep the battery warm enough to charge. That can end up being 50 percent or even more of an L1 charger’s output because they top out at around 1.7kw (on a 20 amp 120v circuit).

I made it through first winter with my EV using l1 charging and it was a shock (pun intended) when I got my electric bill.

Thanks for mentioning this. I never considered that.

The charger arrived. We have failed to connect it to WiFi, so i can’t use the app. But plugging it into the car works. The car announced it was charging, the chargers indicator light turned from magenta (standby) to green (charging) and i guess that’s enough for now.

Yay! I’ve enjoyed following this.
