A friend of mine has expressed the desire to purchase a realistic full body goat costume, preferably made out of real goat(s). How would he go about doing that? Ebay only seems to have “giant teddy bear” style goat costumes for kids, which aren’t what he wants at all. So where would one even go for real looking goat costumes? Are there specialty stores for them? Or perhaps a website?
Well, he could purchase full goat skins from where? You guessed it: http://www.goatskins.com/ They have full hides with hair for $17 each or $140 for 10. Supplies are limited so he better hurry. He can also pick up a drum if he’s into that.
From there he would have to find someone to fit and sew him the costume. Maybe these people could help: http://sew-can-do.com/default.aspx
I’m guessing all in your fetish is going to cost you, I’m sorry, I mean your “friend”, somewhere around $400-500.
Does it need to inflate?
Does your (ahem) friend have any particular aim or use in mind for this costume? Because I can see that affecting the answer. If he intended it to be used as a character in a film, for instance, I imagine he’d need to be looking somewhere different than if he wanted it as some sort of animal decoy in the the wild. Or for simply relaxing around the house, perhaps.
Also, just how realistic are we talking, here? Realistic fur? Animatronic features? Anatomically correct? There’s an obvious limit to how realistic a costume can be and still be wearable (unless you’re a goat yourself, of course, but then a costume would probably be pretty superfluous, I suppose).
In any case, I’d be surprised if he could find much “off the peg”. It’s not really my area, but I do know that there are enthusiasts out there who custom-make their own animal costumes, and that some are available to take on commissions.
Island of Doctor Moreau style? Any good costume shop/FX shop could hook you up but it isn’t going to be cheap.
One where you look like a goat rather than a were-goat is going to be tougher due to posture. How about maybe doing a search for a Lambchop costume and seeing if you can modify it?
This is great for most of the costume except the top part. The skin at the head of the costume needs to have the top half of the scull(horns, and upper jaw) still attached, but without any squishy goat bits in it, how can my friend get something like that going on?
He’ll never be able to be mistaken for an actual goat, since his proportions are all wrong. You can maybe get away with something like a bear, since they’re so much larger than humans that there’s room for padding and such inside to change your shape. But a goat is only about the same mass (and, therefore, volume) as a human, so some parts are sure to be too small for human parts to fit.
My friend is going to wear the costume while walking upright, he has no desire to resemble an actual goat, he just wants an outfit that’ll enable him to be one with his inner beast. The intended uses are Halloween parties, lounging around the house and propositioning strangers on craigslist.
Could be useful for a little Devil worshipping.
One could start with a bare skull, such as this one for about $200. One could fashion some sort of skin on top and then make the whole thing into a sort of hat so that one’s face would still be visible.
Be sure you’ve got the right music playing as you cavort in your goat skin.
Why just buy the skull, when you can buy the whole goat for only $275. You can get a “kid” for $135. http://www.fridaycreekfarm.com/forsale.html
You can then cure the head skin and all.
Sure but it’s a crapload of work to prepare the skin and skull. But perhaps Jame Gumb here would like to do that.
That sounds terrible, my friend loves animals, he’d never murder a goat that he raised himself. I know that any goat skins/skulls I might buy come from adorable goats that used to frolic in the fields and enjoy themselves, but somehow not being the executioner makes a difference to me. You’re right though, those skulls are freaking expensive.
Hey now copper, Mr. Crime Stopper
What is wrong with what we’re doin?
We just like to dance in our goat skin pants
Around this ancient ruin!
Your pronoun is showing.
“Realistic” is the stumbling block here, unless you are looking for some sort of were-goat (aegoanthrope?) costume.
The idea is that when my friend wears the goat costume he should look like a bi-pedal goat. So the outside of the costume should look like the outside of a goat looks like.
I don’t think that will look like a goat when you put it on your head.
You are aware - scuse me, your friend is aware, that goat’s heads are a good bit differently shaped than human ones? I think a better option might be to find actual costume horns (made of light and flexible materials, usually) that LOOK like goat horns, and are actually designed to be worn by humans. Get a set of those, hook them up to a goat-skin hoodie, and you’re set! Cheaper than real goat skulls, and also more comfy for the ritua…er, couch lounging.
