As far as I can tell these two movements are damn-near identical. Bach copied from himself a lot, but I’m wondering if anyone is aware of any commentary on this bit of self-plagiarism.
I don’t have the time right now to check the specific works you’ve mentioned but it is a well-known fact that Bach sometimes re-used certain movements, especially in his cantatas (he had to come up with a new one every week after all).
He also transcribed several of his own works for different ensembles (some of his harpsichord concertos are now thought to be based on lost oboe concertos).
Finally, like all composers, there were some melodic turns and harmonic progressions that he liked and used several times throughout his works.
Regarding BWV 1056 and 1060, there’s this:
BWV 1056
BWV 1060
Not sure if it helps. Come to think of it, are you sure you’re not talking about BWV 156? Because that link is indeed established I think.
Two excellent sites (especially the second) dedicated to Bach:
I’ve listened to these for decades and only after closer examination today did I notice that they aren’t as similar as I had thought. They are certainly similarly-evocative. I was unaware of 156, but after listening just now it is precisely 1056. Curious the number is only off by one extra character.
Thanks for the info!
