By the Donzer Lee Light.....

In less than a month Im movin’ back Stateside…just thought Id announce that…

It’s time to stop bumming around Europe and do something constructive. I got accepted to San Francisco State U. The only thing that keeps me from going into paroxysms of grief at the thought of leaving Europe is the thought that I’ll be living in San Francisco.

But I am a consummate Eurosnob. I intend to continue to drink café au lait from a glass, walk or bike to places, cook things on a stovetop instead of in the microwave, and speak English with a vaguely European accent (nobody can tell anymore whether Im American or British).

Itll be really weird getting used to the fact that I cant go for solitary 2am walks anymore, or leave my bike propped against a wall downtown and find it unscathed three days later. It’ll also be weird not seeing subtitles when I go to movies or rent videos.

Well, to quote Georges de Courteline (dunno who the heck he is, I just like the quote): “It is better to waste your youth than do nothing with it.” Lord, I hope so, or Im in deep trouble.

Welcome back! And thanks for signing my postcard… Tater told me how bad y’all were.

Some of the Teeming Millions must have read Beverly Cleary’s Ramona series. In Ramona the Pest (1968), little Ramona’s teacher has the class sing a song about the “dawnzer lee light.” When she later repeats this at home, Beezus and the parents are puzzled for a few minutes until the older sister realizes Ramona was alluding to “The Star Spangled Banner” and she starts to laugh. The parents try to keep straight faces; Ramona is crushed and runs out of the room crying.

Yup, that was my first thought, too.
