I knew her on LJ back in the day. That’s how I found the dope-- she pointed me to a JDT trainwreck in progress. One time, she stated sending out ICQ messeges of pure gibberish, turned out she’d left her client open, and a very young Nicky was online…
Later on, we didn’t always get along, and I regret that. Why are the ones with so much talent so messed up? Heartbreaking.
Such sad, sad news. It’s been years since we have interacted, but I’ll always remember her being a part of the boards and the IRC chat room. Way too soon for her to go.
She turned 41 in February.
Opal’s passing has turned it into Old Home Week on the SDMB.

Funerals always have a way of bringing families back together.
I only met her once, at Weird Dave and Ginger of the North’s wedding if memory serves. She made an impression that’s for sure. My condolences for all who mourn her especially her son.
I’ve been watching this thread since it started and couldn’t really find any words.
I had some vague idea that Opal was an artist, but I hadn’t really taken the time to check it out. Now that it’s too late, I find out that she was pretty friggin’ talented. I was checking out some of her gallery yesterday and some of her paintings looked nearly photographic in their realism.
I wish I had taken the time to notice that while there was still time to tell her.
I actually lost sleep over this last night. I want this to be a fucking joke.
I remeber Cecil refrencing Opal in one of the later SD books. When I joined in 2011 I was tickled to see that she was still here, and still posting. I was lucky enough to interact with her a bit on some mudane thing or another, I don’t remember what exactly… I’m glad I got to do that.
I was just wondering about her a few days ago. I hadn’t seen her post in a while but too lazy to go look up her posting history. I’m so sorry to hear about her troubles.

I never knew Opal, except as a legend here on the Dope. Her paintings and photos are just incredible. The search for peace in life when it eludes you is like running a lifetime marathon. I hope she has found peace and her family my condolences.
Such sad news. We did have some fun both on the board and in chat way back when. My condolences to her son, her family, and her friends.

I’m just heartbroken for Dominick, who I remember as a sweetheart of five-year-old when Opal was posting most regularly here. I didn’t have nearly as much interaction with her as others, but there was a time when she posted an 800 number she’d paid for and asked for callers. I think we ended up talking for about three hours. I was always amazed at how creative and prolific she was. For someone struggling with depression, she stayed on her feet mentally and physically almost all the time.
I never interacted with her much, but this is still sad news. Too many Doper deaths in recent months.
