A friend of mine has aspirations to learn cabaret-style accordion, and is looking for suggestions of artists to look to for inspiration.
If I can correctly paraphrase her description of the sort of stuff she’s looking for, it’s “what you’d expect to hear in an old black-and-white foreign film, where there’s a dwarf on a stool, and a woman in the corner singing a sad song while accompanying herself on the accordion.”
I tentatively suggested she’s looking for something that sounds like the music in Marlene Dietrich’s The Blue Angel– she hadn’t seen it, but she seemed to agree after I embarassed myself by warbling a bit of Falling In Love Again.
Apart from that, and maybe Kurt Weil, I’m outta suggestions. Is anyone who’s more familiar with the genre able to suggest recordings, sheet music, or what-not, that she might benefit from knowing about?
Thanks!
