I found out that an old French song, sung by a loud, irrepressible woman character (I heard it in first-year French in 1963), was used in the stage musical Cabaret, which opened in 1967. The last part of one verse–I think Bobby Darrin recorded a version of it–went something like this:
Regardez-moi, monsieur [6 unintelligible syllables]
Je suis content de [fall in opo(??)]de la rue!"
It sounded like something from a cabaret, and got wilder from beginning to end, if that makes sense.
Can anyone identify this? I’m sorry–that’s about all I know about it…
I watched a Benny Hill video last night; the song was included as a special number performed by Hill’s Angels. Most of the lines were short sentences addressing M’Lord." I hope that helps.
Edith Piaf (damn, took me six tries to type her last name) did this song - “Milord”. Check out her “Best of…” (or something like that) recordings.
My cassette just broke and I’ve thrown it away, so I’m pretty sure that’s the spelling; if you can get the words (in French), I would appreciate.
Here’s Edith Piaf’s “Milord”

I thought, at first, you were talking about the “Mein Lieber Herr” song from Cabaret, but this is different.
I have been looking for these words for the longest time!!! (Now to find the translation.) But at least I can now belt it loudly in the car without making up the words!
I had had the same inkling about “Mein Lieber Herr” (also a great song - ironically, just listened to “Cabaret” yesterday). But when dougie_monty mentioned “Benny Hill”, I could see the “cabaret”-esque link.
Glad you asked the question! I got my answer, too!
Merci beaucoup, Messieurs!! It’s been almost forty years since I heard the song’s title or singer’s name!
On a Benny Hill video (I ordered it from Columbia House) the “Hill’s Angels” perform the song; the lead singer is a young, talented brunette who was with Mr. Hill a long time. (The video is closed-captioned, yet.)
Dr. Demento fans may also know that Ms. Piaf sang “Black Denim Trousers” (in French, of course) on a recording Dr. D has played on his show. (I still can’t find his show on L. A. radio. :()
