Cable Internet Question. (Or "Why am I getting discoed?")

Hey, this may get moved to GQ, but I figured it would be easily solved and so…

Ever since my ISP (Rogers Cable) split there services (Hi-Speed and Hi-Speed Lite. Myself being on the former.) my connection rate has been through the roof! But this all seemed to end last week.

Over the past week, my rates have dropped. They are still fast, but now as fast. But the other big problem is that, every now and then, my connection is lost.

WindowsXP doesn’t report a connection loss, the modem doesn’t go ‘OffLine’. Everything that is accessing the net times out and can no longer connect for some reason or another. I have to reboot to reconnect.

Anyone have any ideas as to why? (BTW: Nothing has been changed on my system apart from adding a second monitor.)

I can’t speak for your cable ISP but here in Chicago we use AT&T as our provider, and there is a known issue with Windows XP and AT&T’s service. No one wants to claim responsibility for the issue. What many of us experience here while using XP is the connection will randomly drop. To resolve this you could release and renew yuor IP address, or if you are behind a router or other NAT device, set your computer up with a static IP address. Although you may still experience some problems, this should make your life a little easier. I hope this helps.

Rogers and AT&T are one and the same here in Canada…so that may be it.

I’ll look into that.
