Cafe Dopers : Explain the significance of this picture

I really, really, hope this link works

I’ve not been too successful in the past with these things, so here’s hopin’ :dubious:

I did a search first, just in case this has been done already, and I think I’m in the clear.

Ah nuts !

Try this:

This link works. You gotta delete that last tag.

As for the significance, I’m not sure - is that Hitler wearing the light colored coat? Maybe a picture of his military unit before he moved up, so to speak? The plane sure looks like WWI or earlier…

This version appears on the relocated version of that site. And that is indeed recognisably Manfred von Richtofen, the Red Baron, in the cockpit.

Probably not Hitler. That was simply a popular style back then and there.

2nd in command of The Red Baron’s Flying Circus was Hermann Goering. He took over when Snoopy got Manfred.

When was this photo taken?

The airplane doesn’t look like a Fokker Dr 1 triplane, which is what The Baron was shot down in on April 21st, 1918. The mid wing is attatched right to the top of the fuselog on that plane, not like the plane in this photo. I know he flew other planes earlier…

Perhaps it’s an early photo. Doesn’t seem to be enough pilots. I’m really curious. You have any date/period?

The picture does indeed show Manfred Richtofen in the cockpit of an Albatros scout. The other guys are all pilots in his squadron, Jagdstaffel 11 - better known as the Flying Circus.

But that’s NOT why I posted it here.

Its more what this picture was used for some 50+ years later which is significant.

Take a real good look at that grouping of pilots.

Doesnt it remind you of ANYTHING ?

According to this site, April 1917. I take it that it’s the same photo referred to on this site, which talks about the planes. (I freely admit I know nothing about WWI aircraft.)

Is it the album art for Seargent Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band?

No, but you’re on the right track…The pic was used ‘as-is’ but with a few minor alterations.

You’re gonna kick yourselves.

Of course you have to be into the right kinda music I guess, but I hardly think anyone would call it an obscure album.

Rock chalk, jayhawk! As regards the photo - looks vaguely familiar, but I can’t place it… I’ll bet NoClueBoy is right. It must be an image in pop culture somewhere and he’s prolly spot on about it being an album cover or some such.

Is Herb Albert involved?

Was it (or the slightly modified version) the primary image we’d know, or is it part of, say, a collage (like Sgt. Pepper)?

I’ve seen this. It’s in my brain, but I can’t get it to come out. The ONLY thing that is popping in my brain is the cover of Deja Vu by CSNY, but I don’t think that’s right.

Is it
The Jackson Five

Skywriter?

Going by memory only here…

It was used in the cover art for a Led Zep album. Zepellin 2?

THAT’S IT!

(Er, I think. I’m pretty sure, anyway.)

Zeppelin 2

:smack:

I’ve got that on vinyl and plastic!

Was fun…
