A while back, there was a thread about the fact that Woody Allen made a movie with the same name as one of our SDMB forums, but I haven’t found any discussion of the film itself.
I watched it the other night and found it… interesting. Not Woody’s best by a long shot. It wasn’t nearly as deep as it pretended to be (unless I missed something); the point of getting what you think you want – fame, money, access to the “café society” – not necessarily making you happy was somewhat trite. And I just don’t think Kristen Stewart is a very good actress. I didn’t buy that she was in love with either guy at any point. For a while, I thought that was intentional, that she was naïve and didn’t know what love really was, and the twist would be that she finds true love elsewhere and leaves them both. But no, Stewart just wasn’t very convincing.
Still, the film has somehow stuck with me. Steve Carrel created a fascinating, layered character. Jesse Eisenberg, while ostensibly doing a young Woody Allen impersonation, brought more to the role than the script laid out. The gradual change in his personality was nicely done.
Add a cast of quirky side characters, and I found this to be well worth a couple hours of viewing time.
