Cal Spas. What is FFF?

My House came with a 5-seat Cal Spa. I’m not really a hot tub kind of guy, so I’ve never used it. Some friends came over and decided I needed to see if the hot tub works. We filled it with water and heated it up. Worked fine.

They came over yesterday and decided to warm it up again. The digital readout on the control unit reads FFF, when it should read the temperature. I tried pressing the heater reset button, but it doesn’t seem to be moving. The jets work, but the heater light is not illuminated. I ran the spa for a few hours last night, and it seemed to be warming up slowly. (Started in the 40s and was about 60 when I shut it off.) I turned it off overnight, but have just started it up again. I’ll see in a few hours if it’s heating.

The LED readout still says FFF. What does FFF mean, and how do I fix whatever problem there might be?

I’d guess that either the temperature sensor or some other part of the electronics is broken.

This is just a WAG, but “FFF” is more or less the hexadecimal equivalent to “999” in decmial. It may be that the temperature is displayed on a hex display.

Any idea how to fix it? Since the reset button does not seem to ‘push’ (it can be pulled out a little bit, but it doesn’t feel like a contact-making/breaking think), I’m guessing that maybe the switch is faulty.

Unfortunately the documentation I have does not mentioned anything about fault codes.

It means that your spa has been invaded by master spy John Jacob Jenkins

I’d like to help, but the 2004 owners manual is a 272 page PDF file, and it isn’t going to download on my dialup. It might not even have the right info, but it’s the closest thing that I could find on Cal Spa’s website.

Well, the temperature is up to 70°F, so I guess the heater is working.

Here’s a spa heater pdf file:

It says that fff means your temp setting is in Fahrenheit mode. YMMV.
