Cal Thomas writes about the Tulsa rally

I usually don’t agree with him, but he’s written some excellent columns about our excuse for a POTUS, and this week’s is no exception. I give him kudos for taking one for the team and actually watching the whole thing.

Nit-pick: The presidency is an honor and privilege that has been granted to only 44 men in our history.

He missed a golden opportunity, Cal? To be presidential? To unite the country?

Jesus, is this guy senile? Where has he been for the past five years? Stop waiting for this child of privilege to grow up. He’s never going to morph into a decent human being.

Somewhere I saw the Tulsa thing identified as “Coronapalooza”.

Five years? How about the last seventy years? The right wing has always made a strategy of finding enemies and then using those enemies to scare people into voting for them. The enemies have changed over the years - communists, black people, gay people, women, Mexicans, Muslims, hippies, Satanists, atheists - but the strategy has remained constant. Trump’s just playing the same old game.

The only reason people like Cal Thomas are upset is because Trump doesn’t do a very good job of selling it. He’s no more competent as a demagogue than he is at anything else. Conservatives are mad at Trump because he’s damaging the brand name.

Damaging the brand name?

Shit, he’s driving the GOP tour bus over the Grand Canyon cliff.

Well, from a ledge halfway down the canyon, to the bottom.

Problem is, the rest of the country is still attached to the tow hitch.

Even worse, half the passengers are yelling “Go faster!!!”

It is a GOP tour bus: “half” seems like a bigly small number.

I’m amazed that he’s still writing columns. I remember him when I was a kid in the '80s! (And he didn’t strike me as especially young then.)

According to Wikipedia, he’s 77 years old. I too thought he was older than that.

And guess what the latest thing I’m hearing about Tulsa (sorry, no link handy)? Some people who were backstage said that the Manchurian Cantaloupe considered not going onstage because the arena wasn’t full enough.

When I lived and worked in Bristol VA/TN back in the 1990s, the local paper carried Cal Thomas’ column.

Not only was it a bunch of religious-right crap, his pic that went with it had a distinct resemblance to the guy in the infamous “Is Your Washroom Breeding Bolsheviks?” poster.

It doesn’t surprise me that he’s still around. Being a syndicated columnist seems to be an even more secure livelihood than being a tenured professor. At least the professors eventually become ‘emeritus,’ while the columnists keep on writing and being published until they kick the bucket.

I had no use for his paranoia back then. This time, I think he should be taken seriously.
