When I lived in Calgary (up until last summer), I noticed a weird smell along a stretch of Canyon Meadows Drive SW. I was back for a visit recently and noticed that it was still there. It starts very abruptly just east of 14 street, and ends just as quickly just east of Elbow Drive.
It smells kind of like fertilizer, kind of like rubber, kind of like “burning” and kind of like sulfur. (But not really entirely any of those). I thought that it might be some kind of fertilizer that the Canyon Meadows Golf course uses, but I have noticed the smell in the dead of winter as well.
Has anyone else noticed this? From what I’ve read it doesn’t have any “meth lab” type smell (no “cat pee”). Am I just going crazy?
Definitely not! I remember the Lodgepole blowout very well, this is totally different.
featherlou - if you find yourself in the south for whatever reason, roll down the window! Personally, I think that an unidentafiable stink is reason enough. C’mon!
FML - I’ll chalk that lippyness up to your exuberance over getting new things like “the internet” and “computers” and “electricity” up there in the Chuk!
II’ll drive by and take a whiff, if I remember. Though I’m pretty sure it’s just the unique stench of two cars driving side by side at 10 below the speed limit, blocking all traffic.
The key is that it starts very suddenly between 14 Street and Canso Crescent, and ends almost perfectly at Elbow Drive. There’s no wafting (waftage?) The smell hasn’t moved in the two years that I’ve noticed it.
I grew up in Ogden and am quite used to weird smells appearing in the air, but this one has me all intrigued.
Oddly enough, many years ago I was walking by there, and I swear there was a fish in a small puddle beside the sidewalk.
And not a small fish, either.
The easiest thing would be to assume that I imagined it in some way - but it seemed so very, very real.
