Calif starts DO NOT CALL list Tue.

Oh, about time… Yep, the state of California is starting an online registry so you can keep telemarketers from calling you. You can preregister now.

‘DO NOT CALL’ LIST
– What is it? A free “do not call” registry managed by the Federal Trade Commission.
How to sign up: California starts taking names Tuesday through the Internet.
The site is nocall.doj.state.ca.us – click on “pre-register” and follow the directions. There is no ability to register by mail, but phone registration is expected by July.

More Info:

Woo! I’m preregistered.

Woo! Thanks handy, it’s like a dream come true! Hope it actually works.

The list, of course, does not apply to non-profits or political campaigns.

After reading the FAQ, I see it’s for the national Do Not Call list. California abandoned their separate list and decided to put their efforts towards the national list. So it’s just a place for Californians to pre-reg.

Starts in September, then telemarketing scum have 30 days to comply, so October is when it fully takes effect.

AH, more catches:

The new law does not apply to calls from charities, surveys and politicians.

&

No matter who’s calling, the new rules do not protect you from solicitations from anyone you’ve done business with in the past 18 months’

Above article has a lot more info.

I signed up for Tennessee’s after I moved here in August 2002 - I wasn’t going to, but I immediately began being swamped with telemarketing calls.

I get almost none now - I rarely even get charity calls.

So, if the national one works as well as Tennessee’s, it’ll be nice.

Yeah, Florida’s works like a dream, too. Even better when you’re unlisted to begin with. I haven’t gotten a solicitation call in 3 years.

For those of us who do not live in California, here is the sign-up for the national list.

Oops. That’s not the signup, yet. But it WILL be.

Good news! Thanks for the links.

Of course not… the same politicians who made the law still want to be call you and hit you up for votes and money.
