now let’s just hope it works!
on a related note, i got a call from a telemarketer this morning on my cell phone. slightly irritating. turns out they got the info from my school. from what i’ve gathered so far, they’re not allowed to do that since it’s in some way charging me. if they messed up on this, i still see them messing up on the do not call list.
but then again it’s better than nothing at all.
Indiana has a do-not-call list that is enforced with great vigor and has stood up to court challenge.
I’ve been on Wisconsin’s Do Not Call list since Jan. 1, and so far it has worked well. We used to get so many telemarketer calls, I actually answer the phone now.
We don’t have a Do Not Call list in Mississippi, so I’m thrilled about the national list. Once that national list kicks in, I’ll look forward to getting calls so that I can report them. Hopefully the program can be paid for with telemarketer fines rather than tax dollars.
Hate to burst bubbles, but a local news segment said this Do Not Call List is only for “automated” calls - those generated by computer and with computer/taped messages.
Joe Schmuck can still call you personally and offer to clean your carpets for $50/square foot and he will not be breaking any laws.
Yes, the Do Not Call List will certainly lower the number of calls, but it does not ban someone from making a personal call and making their pitch (nor does it ban Visa from pestering you about that last payment you missed.)
According the the news segment, it only bans those annoying computer generated, computer dialed and computer taped-message calls.
Tennessee has a DNC list - I’ve been on it since shortly after I moved back here in August.
It works pretty well. Political calls, charity calls and calls from places you have done business with in the past are still allowed - although I changed LD carriers 2-3 weeks ago and I haven’t had a call from the former one yet.
I get almost no unwanted calls, even from those groups that are allowed to call. My biggest problem has been with my number being one that formerly belonged to a cafe. I get calls (occasional telemarketing calls…mostly not) for them. I tell whoever it is that this is a residence and that’s that.

" Are all telemarketers covered under the federal Do Not Call Registry?
Most telemarketers will be covered by the registry, but federal and state law provide for some exceptions, including charities, political groups, small businesses with five employees or less, companies that have an established relationship with a consumer. However, most telemarketing calls are placed by professional telemarketing companies, and they are not exempt even if they are calling on behalf of an exempt company."
This flicker of sanity almost made me weep with joy. Perhaps humanity is redeemable.
