The Mamas and the Papas had a fascinating off-stage life too. There’s a VH-1’s Behind the Music episode about them with interviews of Michelle and Denny. Their romantic entanglements are hugely complicated. I think that the story of their musical careers would make a great movie.

Oh great… now everytime I hear “California Dreaming” I will hear it like this-

“California dreaming, on such a what the fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!”

My sincere apologies. Really.

…but it does scan nicely, doesn’t it?.

Spot on.

PBS did a pretty good one-hour documentary on them that’s aired a few times in the past year. The DVD is available from Amazon.com.

There’s another YouTube video of California Dreamin’ with the “Cass shuffle” and an item of bizarre headgear, but no bathtub dancers.

Wow, this really took me back to my misspent youth. I saw the Mamas and Papas perform live, twice. And my sister and I used to watch Hullabaloo devotedly. Somehow, while the Mamas and Papas have held up, Hullabaloo, not so much. Gah, we watched some really awful TV! But it was so…groovy!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I especially liked seeing the Yardbirds clip - good stuff there. Wow. I wanted a pair of go-go boots so bad, and used to try to get the “look” down with makeup and hair. When I finally got the boots for xmas, I cried, I was so happy.

I forgot to mention that I used to watch Shindig, Hullabaloo, and an L.A. show, 9th Street West all the time, and actually danced like that, myself. I was 12 or 13 at the time and really wanted to be a teenager!

P’rhaps Granny was one of the dancers in that clip, and that’s why she says that…bettter look closer at those faces…
