What are you “old-fashioned” about?
Call me old-fashioned, but I still buy actual CDs, before downloading them onto my hard drive and iPod.
What are you “old-fashioned” about?
That’s not necessarily old-fashioned. I do the same thing. It’s just another way to have back-ups for your music files.
I use my cell phone to make phone calls, my computer to send e-mails, and my camera to take pictures.
Call me old-fashioned…
What’s a cellphone? A computer? A camera?
I’ll sometimes walk over to another persons office or cubicle to ask a question. Instead of, you know, sending an email.
I still pay utility bills by writing a check and mailing it…
My friends are trying to teach me how to pay bills online, but the idea alarms me, a bit… I’m not yet convinced it’s safe…
What you want to do is make sure you use your bank’s online Bill Pay system, not the utility’s bill pay system. From the bank’s system you can send money to anyone and it only gets sent when you say so.
If you put in your Uncle Harry’s name and address they’ll put a paper check in the mail to him.
With the utility’s bill pay system you create an online account with them and give them permission to take whatever money they want whenever they want and if they take the wrong amount you have to fight to get it back.
The latter approach is not advisable.
I still buy CDs too. And actual books.
I listen to NPR while working. On a Sony Walkman - I don’t think they’ve changed the design since 1985. But it gets clearer FM reception than any other device I’ve ever tried.
I’m slightly less Luddite - I still get most of my bills mailed to me, but I pay them online (I use my banks online payment service). I write down all the information from the online payment on the paper bill - date, amount, payment method, and confirmation number, so my ass is pretty firmly covered (I’ve been an accounting clerk for quite a while ).
I use my cellphone for calling somebody about once a month (usually my husband). The rest of the time it lives in my purse, turned off. I embrace lots of new technology, but not that one.
Relationships, apparently. A lot of Dopers say they don’t have problems with their SO hanging out alone with friends of the opposite sex, inviting strangers of the opposite sex over to the house alone, etc., but I would definitely have a problem with it. Also, I won’t live with a man that I’m not married to, and that has nothing to do with religion. I won’t chase a man, either- I think a man should pursue me, not the other way around. I draw the line at staying barefoot and pregnant, though.
I don’t call people by their given names unless they invite me to.
Call me old fashioned, but the vast majority of the music on my phone right now is Big Band, Frank Sinatra and Marty Robbins. A great mix!
Apparently my husband and I are old-fashioned for wanting to buy an Ace bandage at Target today, because they don’t carry them. All they sell is that single-use sticky + stretchy stuff (e.g., Coban) or joint-specific braces at $20 a pop.
We also bought a small radio/CD player/iPod dock and as usual adamantly refused to buy an extended warranty for it. The 12-year-old cashier kept telling us the benefits of this. (“It’s only 7 dollars! for 2 years!”)
Thank you! That is exactly the kind of thing I didn’t know…and needed to know!
If I am going to progress into the 21st century, it will be with the assistance and kind advice of people like you! I owe ya a (virtual) drink!
A cashier at Best Buy tried to sell me an extended warranty on a DVD today. I hope this was just her own idea and not a new general policy.
Call me old fashioned, but I believe that when you are out to dinner with friends or family, you should not be on your cell phone at the table. Or if you are visiting in someone else’s house! If you have to text or take a call, head outside or to the bathroom please!
In all fairness, I am guilty of this from time to time. But I try to be conscientious of it and keep it to a minimum.
That’s weird. I pay all my bills online, but the payment only goes in when I say so, and in the amount I tell them. Depending on my pay schedule, that changes every month, so I log onto the bill account and tell them “yea, go ahead, take this much” on the day that I choose. I thought all online payment systems had that option.
I use a pen and scrap paper for the odd note, to-do list or reminder. It’s so much easier than any sort of sticky note program on the computer or note thingie on the cell phone.
Yup, my utilities let me pay when it’s convenient. Well, within a few days–they do get miffed if you’re really late.
I still buy CD’s, but only when really love the music; the same with DVD’s/Blu-Rays. I like Rhapsody & Netflix streaming because I can hear/see a bunch for a reasonable price without cluttering up my place–even more. Actually paying for a file seems a bit weird–& not paying for a file is a bit tacky. Besides, hard drives can get cluttered up, too.
I’ve bought MP3’s of a couple of LP’s I own (or owned), if I really love the artist–in vain hope they’ll still get a penny or two. And I’ve still got a bunch of LP’s–& a functioning turntable.
Still buy books but am getting tempted by the electronic readers. Because of all the obsure, OOP stuff that’s available free! (Also, that pesky clutter factor.)
My favorite songs are still all the Styx, Rush and Yes albums from when I was a teen/young adult.
And my cell phone is a prepay that does voice and text, period.
