the Putz sign is a reference to WallyM7, a famous poster here who recently died. He is much loved by folks who’ve been around longer than me. I’ll leave it to them to describe if it’s a good thing or not (my interpretation has been that context is very important).

That particular word “putz” was used by a beloved, now deceased poster (WallyM7) frequently to describe idiots and jerks. The “putz” smilie was created in his honor.

I highly recommend doing a search for threads started by WallyM7.
Not because it is required reading but because he was downright hilarious. Find the one about his experience with the neighbor’s hampster and I guarantee you’ll laugh your ass off.
Unfortunately Wally passed away not long after I started up here and I never had cause to chat with him. Nevertheless I miss him just the same.

I can see why you would miss him. I haven’t read them all but I did read the hamster. He was a very funny person. What the world needs more of.
