Call of Duty: Black Ops

Another video of me playing blops.

Maybe someone else can shed some light on this:

What’s the difference between the red dot sight and the reflex sight? Obviously the ACOG and the red dot sight have slightly differences in magnification (although neither magnify much at all), and differences in sighting speed.

To me, the reflex sight seems like the worst of both worlds- the slowness of of the ACOG with the same sighting as the red dot sight.

Is this true, or is there more to it than that?

Real estate, as in, depending on the gun, those sights take up more or less room on the screen. For example, look at the ACOG scope on the AUG compared to the ACOG on the M16. Some guns also just seem to react differently to the different scopes. The Reflex sight on the Commando makes it perform more like an M4.

But yeah, the primary difference is the amount of screen they chew up. Also, compare those scopes to one of the thermal scopes on the sniper rifles. All you see in the thermal scope is what’s through the scope. You can see more area around the scope in the others.

I just switched from the AK74U to the FAL, equiped with a silencer.

Losing the ability to go rock and roll has taken some getting used to, but since I play Hardcore TDM, I seem to be getting more kills. Usually.

One of the things I really hate about this game is how I’ll go from a 12-6 game, then immediately play agame wherein I’m 2-13 (this just happened, in fact). I know that’s just me, but it’s awfully disheartening.

It’s not just you. Yesterday I had a 34-2 TDM match in Havana and followed that up with a 8-10 TDM in Radiation. Granted there’s maps I tend to play better than others, but sometimes it just seems that the other team has your number and there’s just nothing you can do but die, repeatedly, for 10 minutes. I don’t know if it’s me, or if every so often the game lets you be Rambo.

Definitely not just you! That happens to me nearly every time I play the game for an hour or two. The rest of the time, I only have the 2-13 games.

Different maps, different killstreaks, different teams. Things tend to even out and you can get a representative sample with a static group of people.

My newest random video of something mildly cool I’ve done: game-ending tomahawk.

It’s definitely not just you… my pattern goes something like this: First 2 games, I’m terrible - like 4/12 or so. Second 5-6, I’m either good or breaking even. After about 8, I start to suck hard. It’s like my attention span flags or something.

But then again, there’s a lot to do with teammates and how they play. I’ve played with the same guys on the same maps back to back, and how everyone did depended on who their teammates were and how they play. Some guys just don’t complement each other; they tend to get killed a lot, which lets the other team gang up on you. The same walking targets do a lot better if they’re on a team with a few real killers- they get some breathing room to take up better positions, instead of being dead meat when they go exploring a little bit.

“when they are jumping into a fucking wall for 5 seconds for no particular reason and then they try and stab you when you run by”

It is definitely not just you - there is something wrong with the lag compensation in this game (the company forums are full of complaints - there was a 200+ page thread that got closed). When it is on your side you hardly can lose except when the enemy clearly has the drop on you, and when it isn’t enemies come around the corner shooting and you only win if you can shoot your enemy in the back with a full clip.
I actually switched back to modern warfare 2 - the net code is much better (albeit the balance is worse).

What aggravates me is the lag on the red/green name displays. I can’t count the number of TK’s I’ve accidentally perpetrated because some guy is up on top of something or in a window, and his red/green name thing doesn’t pop up, or people who run in front, and I knife before their thing pops up.

But yeah, there are the spastic ones who, while playing Nuketown, are behind you in the backyard, and you go alongside the house, and they shoot you in the back for no apparent reason.

Nuketown on hardcore is crazy for TKing. If your server automatically kicks for 3 TKs, your really have to think about it before you throw that 'nade on the Nuketown map.

Oh, indeed. Though, I have to admit, I love the Nuketown. It’s one of my favorite maps, right up there with Firing range and Cracked. I’ve been lucky, and I think I could count the number of TK’s I’ve pulled on one hand. But then, I’m a very cautious player anyways. Which also accounts for my weird stats, I suppose.

It is good to hear that consistency isn’t necessarily my failure across the board.

So what’s your favorite load out, players? Perks, gear, etc?

Hmmm. I can’t help but wonder whether there’s a connection.

I will say for myself that there have been several matches I’ve played where I can drop everyone in sight, and several other matches where I shoot at other players with no apparent effect, only for the killcam to show that apparently I never got a shot off.

At the moment, my favorite primary weapons are the AK-47 (with red dot and suppressor) and the G11 (with low-powered scope). In the secondary, I usually use the Strela. My perks are usually Warlord Pro, Hacker Pro, and Ghost Pro. That way I can get additional grenades, can detect (and reprogram) other people’s equipment (I especially love booby trapping enemy care packages), and run around unencumbered regardless of the other team’s air superiority. There’s almost nothing more satisfying in this game than taking down a Huey or Hind within seconds of it flying into the map.

Except for maybe a lucky tomahawk kill.

Another game. 30/4 FFA. Getting better.

I’m starting to notice something happen a lot more often - I get a knife in at point blank range but it doesn’t register.

I play exclusively hardcore and objective games like CTF or HQ, rather than TDM. I carry the AK SMG with a silencer and for a secondary, the .45 with extended mags. For perks, I have the one that let’s you see C4 and claymores, warlord, and I forget the third right now.

I like to be on the assault team trying to get the objective. If no one on my team wants to defend, I’ll fall back and do that and switch to the M4.

I absolutely cannot do that, any kind of Death match just rewards players hiding in corners who wait for someone to run at them.

I never play with anyone I know (Dopers here have pinged me and I really need to figure out how to join their games) but for me its Domination all the way;

-Dying is irrelevant but taking risks can still really help your team which keeps it moving
-You don’t necessarily need to coordinate to help your team, your mini screen will tell you who on your team is where doing what.
-‘Camping’ becomes legitimate control point defending
-Lots of plug-and-play tactical roles to choose from
-Taking Control Point B solo makes you feel like Rambo

Yeah domination is a lot of fun. You know how there is the flag right near you that you are sure to capture; then a second flag that is in between; and a third flag that is closest to the enemy? Sometimes, as soon as the round starts, I like to head straight for the flag closest to the enemy spawn. It really trips them up to be moving in an area they consider friendly and to suddenly find themselves under fire. This can give your team time to capture the middle flag and instantly puts the enemy on the defensive.
