Call the Midwife; series 3 on PBS (open spoilers)

Series 3 starts tonight on PBS. It’s 1959 and Nonnatus House has been demolished; this season should sure be interesting.

Anybody else watching? I’m not liking Trixie’s haircut, but I enjoyed the subplot with the mixed-race baby. It was basically what everyone assumed would happen the last time they did this. I wonder how long this show will go on for. They’ve already run out of source material, and it’s been renewed for 4th series already.

I’ve watched the series already. It goes very soap-opera this year, with its twists and turns.

Except that this mixed-race baby story ended differently – maybe. Did the woman’s husband leave her?

I like Trixie’s haircut – it’s almost a pixie cut, which was popular then. She was reading Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I don’t think the movie was out yet, but if it was, maybe she was going for the Audrey Hepburn look.

I’m getting tired of the perfection – these women get along almost too well – they’re just too perfect. Sister Monica June is the only one who occasionally bucks.

The show could expand a bit if they’d follow up with some of the mothers.

She said it was Jean Seburg from “The Mouse that Roared”

That has always been my problem with the show. Too many happy (or at least hopeful) endings where everyone makes up and are super friends. In their line of work, you’d imagine there should be a bit more melancholy bits at the end - and not just for the mothers who every once in a while don’t get what they want.

Heads up: New show just started last night on BBC that probably fills this gap in the schedule; not babies but still strong, independent women, rubbish men, sentimental, heart-tuggy, etc.

If you got on with this it’s probably worth a punt - fwiw, I got through the first hour without needing their assistance:

Googling tells me that Breakfast at Tiffany’s published 1958, movie wasn’t until 1961. And the Mouse that Roared was released in 1959. What surprised me were all the peace signs on the peace march vehicle. I’ve always associated it with the Vietnam war, but googling again tells me

I’ve enjoyed the show, but have always thought that it could be a little less graphic. I could do without seeing all the details of childbirth.

People in the UK would know it as the CND symbol Nice explanation of its history:

Interesting link. Thanks.

I appreciate the labor/delivery scenes that are reasonably calm. A nice counterpoint to the screaming we hear in other shows.

Where do they get those babies? I assume they’re fake – really good fakes. Are they?

They use real babies. According to an article I read, they book women while they’re still pregnant, so they get babies who still have that wrinkly newborn look.

I haven’t seen this week’s episode, so I can’t comment on that, but have you scene the Call The Midwife/Dr. Who skit yet? Real cast members from both shows  I guess it’s from last year, but I only heard about it in January Call the midwife / One born every minute / doctor who Comic relief sketch (2013) - YouTube

That was hilarious. It was certainly a lot lighter than tonight’s episode.

Wow, that was very hard to watch; especially Lady Browne’s wheezing. This time last year my great aunt/godmother went into home hospice with multiple cancers (she died less than 3 weeks after she was diagnosed). That being said this show is amazing. I wonder what next season’s going to be like now that Jenny’s met her future husband and left to be a hospice nurse. They already ran out of material from the book last series.

That was a very powerful episode, thought the end left me and my girlfriend wondering if that show was over. It seems like they are moving forward with a Season 4… but I wonder how that will work out - especially since Jenny has been the heart of the show and it appears the actress wants to go into film instead and is leaving permanently.

I didn’t know it was the last episode of the season and was surprised to see that Jenny was giving up midwifery for hospice care. Wasn’t sure how they were going to handle the cast split into two storylines, etc. But since she’s leaving, I guess they will continue with the remaining characters, the new tall blonde was obviously meant to slide into her slot. I wonder if they will continue the voice overs?

Wasn’t the NHS recruiting a lot of staff from India around this time. It’s certainly love it if Jenny’s replacement wasn’t white (or even nominally Christian for that matter).

Is that new midwife (Patsy) meant to be gay? In one episode, she helped Fred teach the vicar how to dance so that he could go out with Trixie. Trixie got mad at Patsy and accused her of trying to steal the vicar for herself. Patsy’s reply was something like, “He is so totally not my type.”

A very moving episode. I was a bit surprised to see Sister Monica Jean keeping vigil hour after hour at the bedside, but I was very pleased with the rôle she played in the episode. I think she’s the deepest character in the show.
