Calling Doctor Bombay Home - Bernard Fox, RIP

2016 claims another victim.

Bernard Fox, or Dr. Bombay on Bewitched has passed away at 89.

I wasn’t a big fan of Bewitched, and I much prefer to remember Bernard Fox as Colonel Crittendon on Hogan’s Heroes. He played a very proper British Colonel whose adherence to procedures and dimwittedness screwed up a lot of Hogan’s plans.

I also loved him in the movie Titanic, clinging onto the bow of the ship with Rose and Jack.

I thought he was older than 89 though. :frowning:

Fox was a fixture in 1960’s and 70’s TV. He seemed to pop up at least once in most of my favorite shows.

I remember him fondly in the Andy Griffith show. Playing Malcolm Mayweather in a guest role. A tourist from Europe traveling the US on bicycle.

RIP

Dash it all!

I liked Crittendon. Annoying, but not so over the top.

I found Fox’s character, Malcolm in the Andy Griffith wiki. Fox had 3 wonderful appearances. They kept bringing him back. His last was in The Crossing Guard appearing with Ernest T Bass. Bass challenges him to a fight.

He was a great character actor, but his best role was definitely Dr. Mumbai.

Is anyone left from the cast of “Bewitched” now? (Aside from Tabitha and Adam)

He also had a great turn as the old RAF pilot in The Mummy.

That was his name later in life, after the show.

Be glad his original name wasn’t Dr. St. Petersberg.

There’s a short-circuit deep within my brain that often causes me to confuse Bernard Fox with Billy De Wolfe. No matter, I liked them both.

Jill Foster, one of the actresses who played Betty (a secretary at McMann and White) appeared in 10 episodes. I think she is still alive at the age of about 86. As far as I can tell, all the actors who appeared in more than 10 episodes are dead, excluding the children.

If she has passed on, then the next in line is Bernie Kopell at 9 episodes who is not just alive but still working!

Erin Murphy, who put in the most time in the role of Tabitha, is also still acting.

The twin boys who played Adam have a weird bio.

Looking at Fox’s IMDb page raises a number of interesting points. E.g., is there anyone else who could have remotely had a chance to act in Pee-wee’s Playhouse and Titanic? (An IMDb collaboration search turns up 5 others, all camera/visual effects, that worked on both.)

Stern, not bow. The ship went down by the head.

But yeah, Col. Crittendon rocked!

Stern, bow, hardly matters old boy. What is important is that Britain still rules the seas, eh wot?

That big a ship and they concentrated the bathrooms at one end?

I believe he reprised his Dr Bombay role in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which unofficially fit into the Bewitched universe quite well.

Didn’t he play Dr Bombay on Passions too? Honestly I had no idea he was even still alive until now.

Calling Dr Mumbai, Calling Dr Mumbai
Emergency, Come and Say Hi?

Its Just not the same

RIP Malcolm Merriweather, Maybe Aunt Bee has got some her cooking sherry for you.

Nope. Just Passions and the Bewitched spin-off Tabitha. No Dr. Bombay, played by anyone, is listed for StTW.

I found this line interesting.

He had a long film résumé as well, appearing in both the 1958 Titanic film A Night to Remember and 1997’s Titanic.

I remember his MASH episode, which was hilariously badly written. He portrayed the most stereotypical British person possible, but he did so in the best possible way an actor could do.

I know I’ve seen him in many other things as well. Always talented.
