Bernard Fox, or Dr. Bombay on Bewitched has passed away at 89.
I wasn’t a big fan of Bewitched, and I much prefer to remember Bernard Fox as Colonel Crittendon on Hogan’s Heroes. He played a very proper British Colonel whose adherence to procedures and dimwittedness screwed up a lot of Hogan’s plans.
I also loved him in the movie Titanic, clinging onto the bow of the ship with Rose and Jack.
I found Fox’s character, Malcolm in the Andy Griffith wiki. Fox had 3 wonderful appearances. They kept bringing him back. His last was in The Crossing Guard appearing with Ernest T Bass. Bass challenges him to a fight.
Jill Foster, one of the actresses who played Betty (a secretary at McMann and White) appeared in 10 episodes. I think she is still alive at the age of about 86. As far as I can tell, all the actors who appeared in more than 10 episodes are dead, excluding the children.
Looking at Fox’s IMDb page raises a number of interesting points. E.g., is there anyone else who could have remotely had a chance to act in Pee-wee’s Playhouse and Titanic? (An IMDb collaboration search turns up 5 others, all camera/visual effects, that worked on both.)
I remember his MASH episode, which was hilariously badly written. He portrayed the most stereotypical British person possible, but he did so in the best possible way an actor could do.
I know I’ve seen him in many other things as well. Always talented.
