Sweet Jesus, yes. I had a friend who repeated referred to “the calvary” when she meant cavalry. It made me internally wince every single time.

I’m pretty sure I’ve done this a million times, despite knowing better. Sadly some of us never seem to learn from our mistakes.
It’s because people today don’t know how to spell, they know how to spellcheck. At least, that’s the case with me.
I remember a friend of mine, when I was around 13, telling me that cavalry was wrong, and calvary was right, when referring to the military horsemen. Confused the heck out of me.
But then, his name was Kelvin, and he also tried to explain to me that Fahrenheit and Kelvin were equivalent terms for temperature, which I have also subsequently found to be incorrect (there’s a conversion factor). So he was just a misinformed kid.

If it’s any consolation, until about 2 minutes ago, I thought they were both spelled “Cavalry.”
I never could make the connection.

Me, too. I’m an atheist pacifist and these words rarely come up. I don’t think I’ve ever written them and have only rarely seen them in print. I don’t think you could really blame me for getting it wrong.

I guess this was ingrained in me while gaming. Gamers abbreviate everything, so its always Cav this, Cav that. And mostly text, so I haven’t had the displeasure of hearing somebody make this mistake. I rank it next to newkyoolar. It would hurt my estimate of an “expert” if they said ‘calvary’.
Until this thread, I had no idea Jesus was crucified in Canada.
And when the cavalry controls their horsies, they use reins. Not reigns–reins. If they’re letting the horse run loose, they’re giving him free rein–not free reign. Only Caligula gave his horse free reign.
